Marcelo Ribeiro

Marcelo Ribeiro was born on May 27, 1976, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, into a family that placed great value on health and an active lifestyle. When the time came to choose a sport for young Marcelo, his family gravitated toward martial arts — and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu offered everything they were looking for. He enrolled at Gracie Barra, training directly under Carlos Gracie Junior from the very beginning. That early immersion in the Gracie Barra culture — its discipline, its community, and its technical depth — set the trajectory for his entire career in the sport.

From the earliest stages of his development, Marcelo Ribeiro distinguished himself not as a competitor, but as a teacher. While many of his peers channeled their energy into tournament circuits, Ribeiro found his calling on the coaching side of the mat, taking on instructional responsibilities as early as his blue belt days at Gracie Barra. That coaching-first mentality gave him a depth of pedagogical experience that accumulated steadily alongside his technical growth.

He progressed through the Gracie Barra ranks with consistency and purpose, earning his black belt from Carlos Gracie Junior in 2001. By that point, coaching had become more than an interest — it was a vocation he had been deliberately building toward for years.

Gracie Barra established its presence in the United States in 2005, marking the beginning of a significant organizational expansion. A year later, in 2006, Carlos Gracie Junior extended a personal invitation to Marcelo Ribeiro to join that effort and help develop the organization's American operations. Ribeiro accepted, relocating to the United States with his wife and their three children — all of whom went on to become athletes in the sport. Among them is Joao Marcelo, who carries the family's deep connection to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu forward.

Ribeiro initially contributed to the growth of Gracie Barra's Florida locations before relocating to Texas, where he settled in Austin and assumed the role of head coach at the local Gracie Barra academy. His work in Austin became central to establishing the organization's identity in the American market, building a community of practitioners who reflected the same values he had absorbed as a young student in Rio de Janeiro.

Marcelo Ribeiro's commitment to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu extends well beyond the walls of his academy. He has long applied BJJ's practical dimensions to real-world defensive scenarios, conducting seminars and specialized self-defense training for law enforcement communities across the United States. His work has brought BJJ principles directly to SWAT teams, State Troopers, and Sheriff's departments — professionals who rely on effective grappling and control techniques in the field.

This outreach reflects a core philosophy that has guided his career: the value of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is not confined to sport competition, but extends to everyday life, personal safety, and professional preparedness.

Alongside his roles as instructor and community educator, Marcelo Ribeiro has built a reputation as one of the more highly regarded referees on the IBJJF competition circuit. He has officiated at some of the most prestigious events on the IBJJF calendar, bringing a coach's understanding of technique and a practitioner's appreciation for the subtleties of position and submission.

His dual standing — as both a respected head coach and an experienced referee — affords him a comprehensive perspective on the sport that few in the BJJ community possess.
