Manimal's relationship with Carlson Gracie was one of the defining features of his life, both inside and outside of jiu-jitsu. Living alongside his master for several years, he became one of Carlson Gracie's closest confidants, accompanying him on numerous trips abroad as the Carlson Gracie Team expanded its international footprint. That closeness gave Manimal a unique perspective on the man behind the legend — not just the coach and competitor, but the person.
Within the academy, Manimal developed his coaching craft as an assistant instructor, learning directly from one of the sport's great minds. In time, with Carlson Gracie's blessing, he opened an academy of his own — what would become known as the Manimal Fight Team. The master's explicit endorsement of his student's independence spoke to the depth of trust between them.
One moment captures the pride Manimal took in his black belt more vividly than any competition result: when he completed his degree in Company Administration, he brought his Carlson Gracie black belt to the graduation ceremony. For Manimal, the two achievements were inseparable — both represented years of discipline and dedication, and both deserved to be honored on the same day.
