Luca Atalla was born on October 9, 1973, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, spending his formative years across several cities in the state of Rio de Janeiro. He grew up in São Pedro da Aldeia, studied in Cabo Frio, and moved to Campos dos Goytacazes to complete a technical course before returning to Rio de Janeiro to pursue a degree in Engineering — a path he would ultimately set aside in favor of jiu-jitsu and journalism.

Atalla's introduction to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu came at the age of 18, driven largely by the influence of his brother, Roberto Atalla. His early training took place at Gavea Jiu-Jitsu before he transitioned to Gracie Ipanema, where he trained under Renzo Gracie. In 1994, Atalla joined Gracie Barra — a decision that would prove consequential on every front, setting the stage for both a competitive career and an enduring legacy in BJJ journalism.

Atalla built a focused competitive record in the Peso Leve division (76kg/167lbs), demonstrating sharp technical skill at the lighter weight classes. His most significant achievement came in 1996, when he claimed the World Championship title at blue belt. Carrying that momentum into the purple belt ranks, he won the Pan American Championship in three consecutive years — 1996, 1997, and 1998 — a run that spoke directly to his consistency and technical maturity.

As his editorial responsibilities at Gracie Barra's media arm expanded through the late 1990s, Atalla gradually stepped back from active competition, redirecting his energy toward building what would become the sport's defining publication. He never stopped training, however, maintaining his practice through every professional transition that followed. His dedication to the art was formally recognized in 2003, when Carlos Gracie Junior awarded him his black belt.

Atalla's journalism career began almost simultaneously with his arrival at Gracie Barra in 1994, when he became involved in the launch of Jornal Gracie — a publication that would evolve into GracieMag, the oldest and most prestigious magazine in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. His involvement deepened rapidly, and he rose to the position of chief editor, a role that demanded he set aside both his engineering studies and his ambitions as a competitive athlete.

Over the years, Atalla shaped GracieMag into the definitive voice of the global BJJ community, chronicling the sport's rise from a regional martial art into a worldwide phenomenon. As the publication grew in scope and influence, he transitioned into an advisory role, with Raphael Nogueira, Marcelo Dunlop, and Ivan Trindade stepping into key editorial positions. In August 2013, Atalla departed GracieMag to pursue other ventures, though his connection to the publication would not remain severed. He returned in 2016, editing the final three issues of the magazine and contributing to GracieMag.com alongside Eduardo Ferreira, helping bring the storied publication's print run to a close.

Alongside his journalism work, Atalla contributed to Gracie Barra as a coach. From 2005 to 2006, he taught at the Gracie Barra headquarters, working directly within the organization's central academy. In 2007, he relocated to the United States to lead Gracie Barra's international team, initially settling in New Jersey before later moving to California.

His role in the United States reflected the broader global expansion Gracie Barra was undergoing during that period, placing Atalla at the intersection of the sport's competitive, educational, and media dimensions — a position that suited the breadth of his experience.

Atalla's departure from GracieMag in August 2013 opened an entrepreneurial phase in his career. He pursued photography professionally and took on the management of Crayon Stock, a stock image company, a role he held until December 2015. Though this period drew him away from the jiu-jitsu industry in a formal sense, he continued training throughout.

In early 2016, Atalla launched Gallerr, a social media app and website built exclusively around jiu-jitsu. The platform was designed to connect athletes, coaches, and practitioners while also serving as a repository of historical BJJ content. Gallerr was developed using a lean methodology, with the team deliberately testing different environments to identify genuine market needs before committing to a fixed direction. The venture reflected Atalla's long-standing interest in media, community-building, and the preservation of the sport's history — themes that had defined his professional life since the earliest days of Jornal Gracie.
