The principles central to jeet kune do: directness, adaptability, and functional application, translated naturally when Barker made the transition to Gracie Barra and Brazilian jiu-jitsu, the grappling art that would ultimately define her competitive identity.

Barker's BJJ journey began under the guidance of Victor Estima, a highly decorated competitor and instructor within the Gracie Barra system. Training under Victor built the technical foundation that would underpin a decorated career across every belt level. She subsequently progressed to work under Braulio Estima, a multiple-time ADCC and IBJJF World Champion widely regarded as one of the most accomplished grapplers in the history of the sport, whose influence further sharpened her competitive edge.

Her path to the black belt was not without interruption. Logistical challenges prompted a training hiatus that tested her commitment to the sport, and it was the support of her cousin Bradley Hill that proved instrumental in drawing her back to the mats — a reminder of the personal relationships that have shaped her journey throughout. The perseverance she demonstrated during that period was rewarded on July 7, 2019, when Braulio Estima formally promoted her to black belt, a milestone that reflected both her technical proficiency and her competitive track record.
