Kira Sung

Born on January 29, 1997, in Seoul, South Korea, Kira Sung grew up largely indifferent to conventional sports. Her path into combat sports began in her mid-teens, when she started attending boxing classes — her first serious foray into martial arts. Over several years, boxing sharpened her competitive mindset and physical discipline, qualities that would translate directly to her future success on the jiu-jitsu mat.

The shift from boxing to jiu-jitsu came through a natural but pivotal connection: her boxing coach, who also held a purple belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, introduced Sung to the art and ignited her interest in grappling. The gi, with its technical demands and tactile complexity, stood apart from anything she had encountered in boxing. At 19, Sung stepped onto the mat for the first time at a local Gracie Barra academy in Seoul, committing to the sport with the same intensity she had brought to the boxing gym.

From her earliest days training in Seoul, Kira Sung showed no interest in a quiet, gradual development — she began competing almost immediately after starting jiu-jitsu. Her initial competitive activity took place under the guidance of Myung Hoon Choi at TNT Academy, where her results rapidly outpaced the typical pace of progression. In just over one year, Sung earned her purple belt, a promotion anchored by strong performances at the IBJJF World Championship and IBJJF Pan American Championship as a blue belt — including a silver medal at the 2017 IBJJF World Championship and a bronze at the 2017 IBJJF Pan Championship.

Joining Seorae JJ and Making History

Recognizing that her ambitions required a more focused competitive infrastructure, Sung made the decision as a purple belt to pursue grappling full-time and joined Seorae JJ under head coach Hyuk-il Kwon in Seoul. That move proved transformative. Under Kwon's direction, Sung continued to excel on the international circuit, culminating in one of the most significant moments in Korean jiu-jitsu history: her gold medal at the 2018 IBJJF World Championship, earned as a purple belt. The victory made Sung the first Korean athlete ever to claim an IBJJF World Championship title in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu — a landmark achievement formally documented by BJJ Heroes at the time.

Following her world title, Hyuk-il Kwon promoted Sung to brown belt, and she continued building momentum on the international circuit. In March 2020, Kwon promoted Sung to black belt, completing a white-to-black belt journey accomplished in just 4 years and 9 months — a remarkably swift progression through the BJJ rank system by any measure.

While Hyuk-il Kwon and Seorae JJ remained Kira Sung's primary competitive home throughout her rise, she was equally deliberate in seeking elite instruction beyond Seoul. The demands of the international IBJJF competition calendar gave her regular access to the United States, and she made full use of those opportunities by embedding herself in some of the world's most respected academies.

San Diego, California, and Atos Jiu-Jitsu

Sung's most consistent training base abroad was Atos Jiu-Jitsu headquarters in San Diego, California, where she worked closely with André Galvão and Angelica Galvão. Angelica Galvão, in particular, became an influential figure in Sung's development — offering both technical mentorship and a model of elite female competition at the highest levels of the sport.

Expanding Her Arsenal on Both Coasts

Beyond Atos, Sung trained at Cobrinha's academy in California, where she absorbed a different dimension of high-level guard play and footlock wrestling. Time spent at Unity Jiu-Jitsu in New York further broadened her tactical repertoire. This combination of a stable home base in Seoul with targeted high-level exposure across the United States gave Sung a well-rounded competitive foundation — one that complemented rather than disrupted her relationship with Kwon, feeding directly into her ability to compete against the world's best across IBJJF, AJP, and JJIF platforms.

Kira Sung occupies a unique place in the history of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, both within South Korea and on the broader international stage.
