Born on April 29, 1967, in Los Angeles, California, John Frankl began his martial arts journey at the age of six — an early start that set the tone for a lifetime of disciplined, cross-disciplinary practice.
Building a Striking Foundation
From age 12, Frankl trained Karate under Ron Williams, developing the structured discipline and striking fundamentals that would underpin everything that followed. By 18, he had earned his brown belt — a meaningful achievement that reflected years of focused dedication. During his college years in San Francisco, he broadened his repertoire by pursuing Kuk Sool Won, a comprehensive Korean martial arts system, under Byung-in Lee, ultimately earning a second-degree black belt and demonstrating a rare capacity to excel across vastly different traditions.
Weapons, Stand-Up, and a Multidisciplinary Blueprint
Frankl's weapons training came through Serrada Eskrima, a Filipino martial art centered on close-range stick and blade work, studied under Jeff Finder. He further developed his stand-up game through Muay Thai under Morgan Lim, the legendary Filipino master Antonio 'Tatang' Illustrisimo, and Tony Diego. This layered foundation — spanning Korean, Filipino, and Southeast Asian martial arts — gave Frankl an unusually complete combat education before he ever stepped onto a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu mat.
