Gregor Rangel was born on December 26, 1985, into a family with unusually deep ties to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. His mother, Ângela, is the widow of the legendary Rolls Gracie, one of the most transformative figures in the art's history. Through their shared mother, Gregor is the half-brother of Rolles Gracie and Igor Gracie — both biological sons of Rolls Gracie — though Gregor himself carries no Gracie blood. That distinction never created distance; he grew up in close contact with the extended Gracie family and was immersed in its martial arts culture from an early age.
Despite that environment, Gregor did not immediately pursue the sport with competitive intensity. It was only upon reaching purple belt that he made the deliberate choice to follow the professional path his older half-brothers had forged — committing to BJJ as a vocation rather than a pastime. That decision proved decisive. He divided his time between Rio de Janeiro, where his mother lives, and New York, where Rolles and Igor had established themselves as pillars of the city's grappling community.
