Gabriel Marinho

Gabriel Marinho was born on November 23, 1982, in Campo Grande, in the State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. From an early age, he demonstrated a strong affinity for martial arts, beginning his training in karate at the age of eight. As he matured, the rise of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu on the international stage — driven largely by its effectiveness on display in the early Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) events — captured his attention and gradually redirected his martial arts path.

Intrigued by the practical applications of grappling, Marinho began visiting local gyms in search of BJJ instruction. After sampling several trial classes, he settled on training under coach Bruno Souza at Aqualife Academy in central Campo Grande. At 14 years old, Marinho stepped onto the mats for his first formal BJJ class — a moment that marked the beginning of a lifelong commitment to the sport.

A defining realization took shape during Marinho's time as a blue belt: he wanted to bring jiu-jitsu directly to his neighborhood and use sport as a vehicle for improving the quality of life for children and people of all ages in his community. He pursued this vision at personal cost — including the end of a long-term relationship with someone who did not share his belief in the viability of that path. Undeterred, Marinho enrolled in a physical education degree program and dedicated much of his time outside the university to a BJJ coaching apprenticeship.

In June 2008, still holding a brown belt, Marinho transformed his vision into reality by opening Academia Pro Combat in Rio de Janeiro's West Zone, placing the gym at the heart of the Campo Grande community he had always hoped to serve. The milestone of earning his black belt arrived fittingly on November 23, 2009 — his 27th birthday — when Júlio César Pereira promoted him during the inauguration of GF Team's celebrated "Matriz" headquarters.

Marinho's path to GF Team developed organically through his relationship with his original instructor, Bruno Souza. As Souza began training regularly at the headquarters of Gama Filho — a historic Rio de Janeiro jiu-jitsu institution — Marinho followed, gaining exposure to a higher level of training and a broader network of experienced practitioners.

At Gama Filho, Marinho built meaningful relationships with team leaders Júlio César Pereira and Arlans Maia, both of whom gradually assumed coaching roles alongside Souza. That connection deepened as the team underwent an institutional evolution, transitioning from the Gama Filho identity to GF Team — standing for Grappling Fight Team — in 2007. Marinho remained a committed affiliate through that transition, and his black belt lineage running directly through Júlio César Pereira firmly anchors him within the GF Team tradition.

Gabriel Marinho built a consistent and credible competitive record, competing primarily in the Masters division at the CBJJ Brazilian Nationals in the Peso Leve category (76 kg / 168 lbs). An early indicator of his competitive quality came in 2009, when he earned a bronze medal at the CBJJ Brazilian Nationals as a brown belt — a result that foreshadowed his black belt promotion later that year.

At the black belt Masters level, Marinho's most prominent individual performances came at the 2012 CBJJ Brazilian Nationals and 2013 CBJJ Brazilian Nationals, where he claimed back-to-back gold medals. His contributions extended to the team format as well: GF Team and Pro Combat Academy were part of gold-medal performances at the CBJJ Brazilian Team Nationals in 2013 and 2015, with a silver medal finish at the 2014 edition reflecting the sustained collective strength of the group he helped build. A bronze medal at the 2016 CBJJ Brazilian Nationals rounded out a competitive career defined not by international titles, but by meaningful and consistent national-level performance.

Within Brazilian BJJ circles, Gabriel Marinho is recognized primarily as an instructor rather than a competitor, and the trajectory of Pro Combat Academy reflects the long-term success of the community-oriented mission he set for himself as a blue belt. The academy has developed into a credible institution in Rio de Janeiro's West Zone, producing high-level grapplers who have gone on to compete at the sport's upper tiers.

Among the most prominent athletes shaped under Marinho's guidance are Pedro Alex and Wallace Costa, both of whom stand as testament to the instructional standard he has cultivated over more than a decade of dedicated coaching.
