Fernando Augusto — universally known by his nickname "Terere" — was born on November 15, 1979, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He grew up in the Morro do Cantagalo favela, one of Rio's most challenging urban communities, where drug trafficking and violence defined the landscape of daily life. He is widely credited as a pioneer of the Toreando Pass, elevating the technique into a high-percentage, athletically demanding guard-passing option that rewarded speed and timing over brute strength. In the context of early 2000s BJJ — where guard-passing systems leaned more conservative — Terere's approach was revelatory.

Equally significant was his development and popularization of the Leg Drag Pass, a technique that has since become foundational in modern BJJ guard-passing systems. Where the toreando showcased his explosiveness, the leg drag demonstrated a more nuanced command of weight distribution, angle, and control — a passing tool that proved effective across all body types and competition contexts. His most celebrated student is André Galvão, who went on to become a multiple-time ADCC and World Champion and one of the most recognizable figures in the sport's modern era. That Galvão's foundational development was shaped in significant part by Terere speaks to the depth of instruction and inspiration he provided.

Alongside Galvão, Terere played a pivotal mentorship role in the careers of Rubens Charles — known as "Cobrinha" — one of the most decorated featherweight competitors in BJJ history; Lucas Lepri, a multiple-time World Champion in the lightweight division; and Michael Langhi, another elite World Championship-caliber competitor. Following a dispute with Alliance, Terere founded the TT Team — Terere Team — as an independent project, uniting many of these elite athletes under a single competitive banner. He returned to competition in 2012 at an event in Mexico, marking the beginning of a gradual comeback that surprised many who had feared his best days were permanently behind him. Returning to the Morro do Cantagalo favela — the same community that shaped his earliest years — he founded an academy dedicated to providing underprivileged children with access to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. The initiative was a direct response to his own experience: the same discipline that had steered him away from the drug trafficking and violence of Cantagalo would now serve as a lifeline for the next generation growing up in those same streets.

The academy continues under the stewardship of Ricardo Vieira, ensuring its survival and operation independent of Terere's own turbulent personal circumstances. That the program has endured speaks to the strength of the foundation he built and the genuine need it serves within the community.
