Fernanda Cristo

Fernanda Cristo's story is defined by a dual cultural identity as distinctive as her jiu-jitsu pedigree. Born in Brazil to a Brazilian father and a mother of Japanese descent, her parents were based in Japan at the time of her birth, having traveled to Brazil specifically to be close to family for the delivery. When Fernanda was just five months old, the family returned to Japan — the country where she was raised and where she continues to represent in international competition.

The jiu-jitsu environment that shaped her was built from the ground up by her own family. Her father, Rogério de Cristo, had begun training several years before Fernanda was born, and her mother joined the training room when Fernanda was just one year old. The couple eventually founded Evox Academy, immersing Fernanda in the sport long before she was old enough to participate. She joined the kids' program at four and entered her first competition at five — a beginning that felt less like a deliberate decision and more like a natural extension of the world she had always known.

That dual identity — Brazilian by birth and heritage, Japanese by upbringing and sporting allegiance — gives Cristo a singular position within global BJJ. Competing under the Japanese flag while carrying the technical traditions of a Brazilian coaching lineage, she has developed both a style and a career trajectory that reflect the best of both worlds.

Long before she stepped into adult competition, Fernanda Cristo was establishing herself as one of the most promising young competitors in the sport. Competing in both juvenile and adult divisions of major IBJJF events while still in her teens, she demonstrated a competitive maturity that set her apart from her peers.

Her dominance on the Asian regional circuit began early. Cristo claimed gold at the 2017 IBJJF Asian Championship at the juvenile level, adding a silver medal in a separate category during the same event cycle. She returned to the podium the following year, winning the 2018 IBJJF Asian Championship again at the juvenile level and further consolidating her regional standing.

Her 2018 campaign extended well beyond Asia. At the 2018 IBJJF Pan American Championship, Cristo earned both gold and silver at the juvenile level — a remarkable showing that reflected her ability to compete across multiple weight categories within a single tournament. She capped the year by claiming the top spot at the 2018 IBJJF World Championship at the juvenile level, cementing her reputation as one of the top young competitors in the sport globally. These consistent podium finishes across multiple continents signaled, well ahead of her adult career, that Cristo possessed both the technical foundation and the competitive temperament to perform on the world stage.

Cristo carried substantial momentum into the adult colored belt ranks, and her purple belt campaign validated the expectations that had been building throughout her juvenile career. Competing against experienced adult athletes well before most competitors reach their competitive prime, she posted results that spanned three continents.

Her 2019 season was particularly productive. Cristo earned bronze at the 2019 Pan Jiu-Jitsu IBJJF Championship at purple belt — a strong opening result against the depth of adult competition in the Americas. She then returned to the circuit where she had built much of her foundation, winning gold at the 2019 IBJJF Asian Championship at purple belt and reinforcing her status as the dominant force in that regional division. Later in the year, she added a bronze medal at the 2019 IBJJF World Championship at purple belt, placing herself among the elite competitors in the world at her belt level.

In 2020, Cristo reached another milestone in her colored belt career, claiming gold at the IBJJF European Open Championship at purple belt. The European title — won at 17 to 18 years of age against a competitive international field — stands as a defining result of her pre-black belt career, underscoring her ability to perform under pressure on a high-stakes stage far from her home base in Japan. Across the Americas, Asia, and Europe, her purple belt record reflected a technically well-rounded game forged through years of intensive preparation under her father's coaching — and made her black belt promotion a matter of inevitability rather than surprise.

On July 24, 2021, Rogério de Cristo promoted his daughter to black belt at the age of 19. The promotion was a direct reflection of a career built through accumulated results and deep technical development within a single coaching lineage — one that had guided Cristo from her first competition at age five through the upper tier of international colored belt competition.

Stepping into the black belt division as a teenager, Cristo brought with her an unusual depth of competitive experience relative to her age. Representing Evox Academy — the gym her parents founded — she transitioned to elite competition without the extended adjustment period that often characterizes a competitor's early black belt years.

The results confirmed her readiness. At the 2022 IBJJF World Championship, Cristo earned bronze at black belt — a significant debut result at the sport's most prestigious annual event. She followed that performance with a third-place finish at the 2022 Pan Jiu-Jitsu IBJJF Championship at black belt, demonstrating that her World Championship result was no anomaly. Competing in the Meio-Pesado (74 kg) division, Cristo's early black belt performances established her as one of the more compelling emerging figures on the international IBJJF circuit — an athlete whose career, built across two continents and multiple belt levels, was only beginning to reflect its full potential.
