Fabricio Medeiros

Fabricio Medeiros was born on December 9, 1975, in Brazil, and developed into one of the more well-rounded competitive practitioners of his generation. His martial arts journey began under first coach Carlinhos Andrade, who guided him through seven years of foundational training — promoting him through yellow, orange, and green belts. That extended partnership instilled a technical discipline that would underpin Medeiros' entire career.

At 17, Fabricio took a decisive step forward by joining the renowned Associação Oriente, led by 9th degree red belt Amélio Arruda Câmara. The academy's highly technical environment sharpened his fundamentals considerably. However, Associação Oriente focused primarily on juvenile divisions and lacked the structural professionalism of larger competitive teams. As Medeiros' ambitions grew, so did his need for a more demanding environment.

In pursuit of elite-level training, Fabricio Medeiros made the pivotal decision to join Carlson Gracie Academy. The move proved transformative. Training alongside legendary figures such as Ricardo Liborio and Bebeo Duarte, he absorbed the high-pressure, competition-driven culture that defined the academy. Most significantly, it was at Carlson Gracie that Medeiros met Renato Tavares — the instructor he has consistently referred to as his Master.

Under Tavares' guidance, Medeiros earned his black belt in 2000, formalizing his standing within the sport's upper tier. The student-master relationship extended well beyond that promotion and proved central to his long-term development.

When Renato Tavares relocated to the United States, the Carlson Gracie team lost many of its prominent members. Rather than allow that transition to stall his growth, Medeiros expanded his training network. He developed his wrestling under coach Flavio Cabral in Niterói and sharpened his jiu-jitsu alongside training partners including Sebastian Lalli, Anderson Pereira, Vinicius Gahyva, Rafael Rebello, and Josimar Neves. This period also brought him to Copacabana, where he trained at Fight Zone — the headquarters of Checkmat — working closely with Ricardo Vieira. Upon his own relocation to the United States, Medeiros reunited with Renato Tavares and joined his association there, bringing the student-master relationship full circle.

Fabricio Medeiros launched his mixed martial arts career in 2002, leveraging a technical jiu-jitsu base refined over more than a decade. He compiled a record of 7-1-0, with performances marked by consistent success inside the cage and ring. Despite those results, MMA served as a secondary pursuit — Medeiros was drawn to its atmosphere and challenge, but his deeper commitment always remained with jiu-jitsu.

His training under coach Flavio Cabral in Niterói also produced meaningful growth in freestyle wrestling, rounding out an athletic profile that spanned gi jiu-jitsu, no-gi grappling, wrestling, and MMA. This multi-discipline foundation gave Medeiros a competitive edge across formats throughout his career. His decision to step away from MMA in the mid-2000s reflected not a lack of ability, but a clear sense of where his true passion and purpose lay.

Competing in the Peso Leve division (76kg/168lbs), Fabricio Medeiros demonstrated that elite-level performance need not diminish with age. His masters and seniors career stands as a testament to the durability and continued refinement of his game across both gi and no-gi formats.

World and International Titles

His most prominent title came in 2016, when he claimed the World Masters Championship in the Master 3 division — a result that underscored his sustained excellence at the highest level of the sport. A 3rd place finish at the International Masters & Seniors Championship in the Senior 1 division in 2013 further confirmed his standing on the international stage.

Brazilian National Success

At the Brazilian National Championships, Medeiros captured the Master division title in both 2009 and 2010, then added a Senior 1 title in 2011, demonstrating the ability to compete effectively across age categories. His no-gi credentials proved equally strong: he claimed Brazilian National No-Gi titles in the Master division in both 2010 and 2011, followed by a Senior 1 no-gi title in 2012.

The breadth of these accomplishments — spanning gi and no-gi, multiple divisions, and nearly a decade of consistent podium finishes — reflects a competitor who continued to evolve and invest in his craft long after his black belt promotion in 2000.
