Dean Liebenberg was born on April 9, 1982, in Durban, South Africa — a coastal city whose sporting culture left a lasting imprint on his athletic identity. From an early age, he gravitated toward physical competition, building his foundation through rugby and bodyboarding. Both pursuits demanded toughness and an instinctive feel for body mechanics, qualities that would prove surprisingly transferable to the grappling arts.

His relocation to Australia brought continuity rather than disruption. He kept playing rugby and embraced the coastal lifestyle Durban had introduced him to, bodyboarding along Australia's shores. Beneath the surface, however, a competitive drive was taking shape that would eventually seek a deeper outlet. Around 2002, while living in Queensland, Liebenberg encountered his first serious exposure to grappling — a modest beginning that planted the seed for what would become a defining pursuit.

London Fight Factory and a String of Elite Mentors

The pivotal shift in Liebenberg's martial arts journey came when he relocated to London, England, at the age of 24. At London Fight Factory, he began pursuing Brazilian jiu-jitsu with genuine seriousness. His first coach, Rodrigo "Brucutu" Cabral, introduced him to the technical framework of the sport. From there, Liebenberg trained under a succession of accomplished instructors at the same gym — Thiago "Monstro" Borges, Claudio Silva, and Marco Canha — each adding new layers to his developing game.

The Carlos Vieira Partnership

The most consequential coaching relationship of Liebenberg's career began in 2006, when he met Carlos "Portugues" Vieira. What followed was a sustained transatlantic partnership that took Liebenberg to the Canary Islands and Brazil, where he trained regularly alongside Vieira in demanding environments far from the comfort of a home academy. The willingness to chase elite training regardless of geography became a defining characteristic of his approach to the sport.

In 2009, Liebenberg made the decisive choice to leave rugby behind entirely, committing himself fully to jiu-jitsu. During this period, he helped establish a tight-knit training group at London Fight Factory known as "Backroom BJJ" — a community built around disciplined, purposeful training partnerships. Years of sacrifice, travel, and focused development under Vieira culminated on June 26, 2014, when Carlos "Portugues" Vieira formally promoted Liebenberg to the rank of black belt, cementing a lineage that traces directly through Vieira.

Early International Results: Purple and Brown Belt

Liebenberg's competitive record reflects an athlete who performed at a high level across multiple belt ranks and on multiple continents, competing in the Super Pesado division (100kg/221lbs) and bringing considerable physicality to every appearance.

His international profile began to take shape in 2011, when he produced notable results on opposite sides of the world within the same year. At purple belt, he claimed gold at the IBJJF Pan-Pacific Championship and reached the podium at the IBJJF European Open, finishing third — a pair of results that demonstrated both his technical development and his appetite for high-level competition.

The brown belt years deepened his résumé further. In 2014, he reached the final of the 2014 IBJJF Pan Jiu-Jitsu Championship, placing himself among the top brown belts in his division on the continent. In 2015, he won the AFBJJ South Australian Championship and earned a bronze medal at the 2015 IBJJF World Jiu-Jitsu Championship — one of the most competitive events on the global calendar.

Black Belt Campaign and the 2019 UAEJJF Circuit

At black belt, Liebenberg continued to build his record against elite competition. A second-place finish at the IBJJF Melbourne Open in 2016 marked an early milestone at the new rank. His most sustained run of international success came in 2019, when he reached the podium at four separate UAEJJF events: third place at the Abu Dhabi World Pro in the Master 1 division, bronze medals at both the UAEJJF Grand Slam Tokyo and the UAEJJF Grand Slam Los Angeles, and a third-place result at the UAEJJF Australia National Pro. The 2019 campaign established him as one of Australia's most competitive black belts on the international UAEJJF circuit. He carried that momentum into 2020, claiming second place at the UAEJJF Continental Pro.

From Mining Camps to Full-Time Jiu-Jitsu

Liebenberg's return to Australia in 2011 opened a quieter but equally purposeful chapter. He balanced work in the mining industry with ongoing training and competition, maintaining his growth as an athlete while living a grounded, working life far removed from the London academy environment he had known. That balance shifted decisively in 2014, when he left his mining career to commit to jiu-jitsu as a full-time pursuit — a decision that set the stage for what would follow.

Building Vermelho BJJ

In 2017, Liebenberg channeled the full breadth of his experience — spanning South Africa, London, the Canary Islands, Brazil, and Australia — into the founding of Vermelho BJJ on the Sunshine Coast, Australia. The academy's name, Vermelho, is the Portuguese word for "red," a choice that reflects Liebenberg's deep immersion in Brazilian jiu-jitsu culture and the years he spent training in Portuguese-speaking environments alongside coaches like Carlos "Portugues" Vieira. The name also connects directly to one of Liebenberg's own nicknames, "Cu Vermelho," tying the team's identity to its founder's personal brand within the sport.

Vermelho BJJ represents the culmination of a journey that began on the rugby fields and bodyboarding breaks of Durban and wound through some of the world's most demanding jiu-jitsu training rooms.
