Rodrigo "Brucutu" Cabral was born on July 7, 1981, in Brazil, and grew up in Rio de Janeiro, where he took his first steps in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under Fredson Alves at Gracie Humaita. Training at one of BJJ's most storied institutions from the outset laid a deep foundation for what would become a lifelong commitment to the art. Cabral received his blue belt in 1999, though a personal hiatus soon interrupted his progression, temporarily pulling him away from the mats.

Upon returning, Cabral came under the guidance of Marcos Norat, a Humaita world champion and black belt who awarded him his purple belt. His brown belt followed under Rocian Gracie, keeping Cabral firmly within the Gracie Humaita lineage through those formative years. This multi-instructor path through the Humaita system cultivated an early appreciation for diverse coaching perspectives — an outlook that would later define his own approach to teaching.

Cabral's trajectory shifted when he relocated to São Paulo and transitioned from the Gracie Humaita camp to train under Leonardo Vieira, cementing an affiliation with Alliance that would shape the remainder of his career. The years spent under Leo Vieira proved formative, providing Cabral with the technical depth and competitive grounding he would carry through his international journey.

When life brought Cabral back to Rio de Janeiro, he continued his development at the Alliance academy in Leblon under Ricardo Vieira, Leonardo's brother. Ricardo Vieira promoted Cabral to black belt in 2005 — an act that served as the formal endorsement of Leonardo Vieira's recognition of his student's readiness. Though the promotion came through Ricardo by circumstance of geography and timing, the black belt lineage remained firmly rooted in the Leo Vieira and Alliance tradition — a lineage Cabral has carried throughout his competitive and coaching career.

In the early 2000s, Rodrigo Cabral traveled to London, England, to study English, training with the Alliance and Master team during his time abroad. That initial stay planted the seeds of what would become a significant chapter in his coaching life. After returning to Brazil, Cabral made his way back to London and took on a head coaching role at the London Fight Factory on Hanbury Street in the city's East End — a small operation that grew exponentially under his guidance.

Cabral's influence at the London Fight Factory demonstrated his ability to build a competitive team from the ground up, an experience that proved invaluable when he later established his own academy in the United States. His international reach extended further during this period when he helped open the first Alliance affiliate academy in Russia, leaving his friend Luis Gustavo — known as Guga — behind to coach there before moving on to his next chapter. The years spent building teams across England and contributing to BJJ's development in Europe shaped the methodical, athlete-centered coaching philosophy that would come to define the Brazilian Fight Factory.

Rodrigo Cabral's competitive career was defined as much by adversity as by achievement. A prolonged series of injuries — including surgeries on both shoulders from separate training accidents — significantly disrupted his ability to compete at the highest level during what should have been his peak years. This difficult period coincided with time spent at the Alliance Leblon academy in Rio de Janeiro under Alexandre Paiva, where Cabral worked to rebuild his physical capabilities alongside his continued development as a grappler.

Landmark Results and a Career Spanning Two Decades

The resilience Cabral demonstrated through those setbacks found its most meaningful expression in 2011, when he claimed 1st place at the CBJJ Brazilian Nationals — the Brasileiro — in the Master division. Winning the Brazilian Nationals stands as one of the defining competitive moments of his career, a testament to the determination he sustained through years of physical hardship. The momentum carried into 2012, when Cabral earned a silver medal at the IBJJF Masters World Championship, confirming that his return to form was a sustained run at elite-level performance, not a brief resurgence.

Beyond those landmark results, Cabral's competitive record includes victories at the IBJJF London Open in 2005, the UK Grappling Challenge in 2007, the FJJR Rio State Championship in 2008, the IBJJF Dallas Open in 2012, and the IBJJF Austin Open in 2017 in the Master division — a body of work spanning nearly two decades and multiple continents. His injury history also left a lasting mark on how he approached training in later years, gradually shifting his personal focus toward no-gi competition to protect his fingers after more than twenty-four years of judo and BJJ.

In 2013, Rodrigo Cabral founded Fight Factory Jiu-Jitsu in Austin, Texas, establishing his own academy after decades of training and coaching across Brazil, England, and beyond. The Austin academy had previously been affiliated with Robert Drysdale, who recommended Cabral to take over as head coach — providing a ready-made foundation and an established community for the new program to grow from.

From the outset, the Brazilian Fight Factory was designed to be open to students of all levels, reflecting Cabral's inclusive philosophy toward instruction. Rather than building a gym model around affiliation-driven financial arrangements, Cabral has consistently prioritized genuine, high-quality instruction as the academy's core purpose — a stance rooted in his years of watching BJJ expand globally, for better and worse. The personal sacrifices involved in building the academy carried real weight: Cabral has spoken candidly about the difficulty of spending extended periods away from his family throughout his international career, a challenge that gave additional meaning to his decision to put down permanent roots in Austin and invest fully in a single program.

At the heart of Cabral's coaching philosophy is a commitment to customization. Rather than applying a uniform curriculum across all students, Cabral tailors instruction to the specific physical and technical needs of different weight classes, recognizing that what works for a lightweight competitor can be counterproductive for a super-heavyweight. This weight-class-conscious approach pairs with a systematic focus on identifying and closing individual performance gaps — a level of analytical rigor uncommon at the gym level, and one that reflects Cabral's career-long exposure to elite training environments across multiple countries.

Kody Steele, Tiffany Butler, and the Tackett brothers all developed under Cabral's guidance in Austin, competing successfully in both gi and no-gi formats and representing the academy's well-rounded competitive program. William Tackett has emerged as a particular standout, with Cabral publicly advocating for his inclusion in the ADCC World Championship on the strength of Tackett's performances at the ADCC US trials — a vocal endorsement that speaks to the confidence Cabral places in the athletes he develops.

Cabral's personal shift toward no-gi training, undertaken to protect his fingers after more than two decades of gi-based grappling and judo, has also shaped the academy's broader competitive direction, with no-gi performance becoming an increasingly prominent pillar of the Fight Factory's program.
