David Herzog

David Hertzog, born on February 27, 1975, in the United States, came to martial arts not through sport, but through necessity. A career in law enforcement created a practical demand for effective self-defense skills, driving him toward grappling disciplines suited to high-stakes, real-world situations. His foundation in Judo and Japanese Ju Jitsu aligned naturally with the physical demands and confrontational realities of police work.

When Hertzog returned to Pennsylvania to continue his career as an officer, he transitioned to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu — a move that reshaped his martial arts identity entirely. The purposeful, occupation-driven mindset he carried from his early training gave his grappling a grounded quality, with an emphasis on control, leverage, and submissions that translate well beyond the competition mat.

Building Within the Tatu Lineage

Hertzog began his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training under Rogerio 'Tatu' Taborda in Pennsylvania, becoming a central figure within the Tatu BJJ School community. Rising steadily through the belt ranks, he developed into one of the school's main instructors, contributing meaningfully to the program's technical growth and competitive identity.

At purple belt, Hertzog earned a runner-up finish at the World No-Gi Championship in 2008 and a third-place finish at the Pan American No-Gi Championship the same year, both in the Master division. Stepping into the brown belt division, he placed second at the World No-Gi Championship in 2009, adding further podium finishes at the Pan American Championship and the Pan American No-Gi Championship Master Absolute division that same year.

In March 2010, Professor Taborda promoted Hertzog to the rank of BJJ Black Belt.
