Bebeo Duarte competed primarily in the Super Heavy (Super Pesado) and Heavy (Pesado) divisions, establishing himself as one of the most capable big-man competitors of his generation. His peak years in the mid-1990s produced a run of results that cemented his reputation on the international stage.
Pan American and World Championship Glory
In 1996, Bebeo claimed gold at the Pan American Championship, announcing himself as a dominant force in the Super Heavy category. Later that year, he advanced to the final of the IBJJF World Championship, where he met Roberto Magalhães in a closely contested bout. Though he earned the silver medal in defeat, the experience sharpened his resolve heading into the following season.
He returned to the World Championship in 1997 with unfinished business — and delivered. Bebeo claimed gold in the Super Heavy division, closing out the bracket against a teammate to secure the title. That 1997 World Championship gold stands as the crowning achievement of his competitive career and confirmed him among the elite heavyweights of his era. Back-to-back appearances in the World Championship final — silver in 1996, gold in 1997 — represent one of the more compelling competitive arcs of that period in BJJ history.
