Adriano Silva

Adriano Silva was born on August 17, 1978, in Marília, in the State of São Paulo, Brazil. He grew up in the nearby town of Garça, where his family had settled, and it was there that his journey in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu began in 1996. At sixteen years old, Adriano had no prior exposure to the art — a simple invitation from a close friend was all it took to bring him to the mats for the first time.

His first instructor was Professor Garcia, a student of the late Marcelo Behring, whose lineage traces directly to the foundational roots of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Under Garcia's guidance, Adriano took his earliest technical steps and developed a genuine passion for the sport. That initial chapter was brief, however — Garcia returned to his native Rio de Janeiro, prompting Adriano to seek new instruction. He found it in Helio Oshiwa, who became a defining influence in his formative development.

Adriano Silva trained under Helio Oshiwa from 1996 through 1999, earning his blue belt and steadily building a disciplined technical foundation. In 1999, he relocated to the state capital of São Paulo to pursue a degree in Sports Science — a decision that shaped both his academic trajectory and his evolution as a BJJ practitioner.

In São Paulo, Adriano joined the academy of Octavio de Almeida Junior, one of the oldest and most established Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu institutions in the state. Training under Almeida Junior proved transformative, and in 2003, he awarded Adriano his black belt — a recognition of years of disciplined effort and competitive dedication. Adriano competes in the Peso Médio division (82kg / 181lbs).

Following his black belt promotion, Adriano affiliated with Barbosa Jiu Jitsu, the organization led by Marco Barbosa — widely known as Barbosinha — one of the most respected and competitive BJJ teams in Brazil. The move placed him within an elite competitive environment that would underpin the most decorated chapter of his career.

Regional and National Dominance

Adriano Silva built one of the most consistent competitive records in Brazilian regional and international BJJ from the mid-2000s through the early 2010s. His sustained excellence on the São Paulo circuit is best illustrated by ten São Paulo State Championship titles — a remarkable achievement that speaks to both his technical consistency and his competitive durability.

On the national and South American stage, Adriano claimed three South American Championship titles under the CBJJE banner, including victories in 2007 and in 2008 in both the weight and -79kg absolute categories. He reinforced that standing with a Brazilian National Cup title in 2008 and a Circuito Paulista Championship that same year under the FPJJ organization, establishing himself as one of the premier competitors in his division across the continent.

Masters Division Success and Peak Years

Adriano's success extended into the masters divisions, where he captured the International Masters and Seniors Championship in 2008, 2009, and 2010 — demonstrating remarkable longevity and adaptability as a competitor. In 2009, he added a World Pro Cup Championship in the master division. In 2010, he claimed both the World Cup title under the CBJJE and the National Cup title under the WPC, along with the SP Cup in the open weight category, making 2010 one of the most productive years of his career.

International Podium Performances

At marquee international events, Adriano earned bronze medals at the Pan American Championship in both 2007 and 2008, as well as two Brazilian National bronze medals — one in 2007 and one at the 2003 brown belt level — reflecting a competitive record that stretches back to his earliest years as an advanced student. His appearance at the Rio International Open in 2012 marked one of his final recorded competitive performances, capping a decade of high-level dedication to the sport.
