About this match
Daniel Deeder made his welterweight debut at UFC BJJ 11, defeating Kolby Gonzales by Kimura in the third round. The finish came after two competitive rounds in which Deeder was active off his back but struggled to convert his submission attempts. In the first round, Deeder pulled guard to initiate the ground exchanges, but referee Ricardo Almeida stood the pair up after the action slowed. Deeder then attempted a flying reverse guard and looked to work a toe-hold, but the 16-year-old Gonzales stayed compact to shut it down. Deeder followed up with an armlock attempt that Gonzales also defended well.
The second round saw Gonzales try a flying back-take, which Deeder evaded, prompting him to wag a finger at the younger competitor. Gonzales used his wrestling to take Deeder to the mat on the slope of the Bowl, then later tried to work into an arm-triangle choke after the referee reset them, but Deeder escaped. Deeder began working a footlock near the end of the round but time ran out before he could complete it.
In the third round, Gonzales again took Deeder to the mat and worked from top position. The match appeared to settle into a stalemate, but Deeder spotted an opening, grabbed Gonzales's left arm, and wrenched it into a tight Kimura. Gonzales did not tap, and Deeder applied more pressure, appearing to break Gonzales's arm to force the finish. The break was audible and raised immediate concerns for Gonzales's well-being. Wishing Kolby a full and speedy recovery.
