Underhook Control
Position
Underhook control is a dominant positional state achieved when one practitioner secures an underhook—arm threaded under the opponent's arm and across their back—giving them inside positioning and leverage advantage. It is a critical junction point used offensively from guard (to set up sweeps, back takes, and guard transitions) and from top position (to set up passes and submissions), making it one of the most versatile control positions in BJJ.
Quick Reference
Key principles
- · The underhook arm must drive deep across the opponent's back with the elbow tight to your own body to prevent the opponent from re-pummel or crossface counters.
- · Your head must be on the underhook side, pressuring into the opponent's chest or shoulder to create a strong frame and deny crossface.
- · Hip positioning determines offensive options: hips close and angled toward the underhook side maximize sweep and elevation potential.
- · Anticipate the opponent's whizzer (overhook) counter by keeping your elbow pinched and using head pressure to nullify their leverage.
- · Maintain chest-to-chest contact to prevent the opponent from creating distance or inserting frames.
Execution
- 1 Win the inside position by threading your arm deep under the opponent's arm, gripping their far lat or belt line while keeping your elbow tight.
- 2 Place your head firmly on the underhook side, driving into the opponent's shoulder or chest to block crossface attempts.
- 3 Shift your hips close to the opponent and angle them toward the underhook side, eliminating space.
- 4 Use your free hand to control the opponent's other arm, hip, or collar to prevent framing and set up your next attack.
- 5 Maintain constant forward pressure or upward lift with the underhook to keep the opponent reactive and off-balance.
Common mistakes
- × Inserting the underhook shallow (only to the armpit) instead of deep across the back, which allows the opponent to easily strip it or counter with a whizzer.
- × Keeping the head on the opposite side of the underhook, which exposes you to crossface and lets the opponent flatten you or redirect your posture.
- × Leaving hips distant or square rather than angled, which reduces leverage for sweeps and allows the opponent to re-establish frames or disengage.
