Also known as:
Technical Mount Top Tech Mount

Technical mount is a variation of the mount where the top player shifts one knee up near the opponent's head while posting the opposite foot flat on the mat near the hip, creating a semi-seated position on the opponent's torso. It is used to maintain control when the bottom player turns to their side, and it serves as a critical transition point for taking the back or attacking submissions like the armbar.

Quick Reference

Key principles

  • · The knee near the head stays tight to the opponent's shoulder, blocking them from turning back to flat.
  • · The posted foot stays heavy and flat on the mat, providing base and preventing the bottom player from escaping over that leg.
  • · Chest pressure drives into the opponent's upper back or shoulder line to flatten them and limit hip movement.
  • · Underhook or seatbelt grip control on the far side anticipates the opponent's attempt to turtle or create space.
  • · Weight distribution stays forward and over the opponent rather than sitting back, which would invite escapes.

Execution

  1. 1 From mount, as the bottom player turns to their side, slide your knee on the exposed side up toward their head, placing it tight against their shoulder.
  2. 2 Post your opposite foot flat on the mat near their hip with your knee pointing upward, establishing a strong base.
  3. 3 Drive your hips forward and settle your weight onto their upper back and shoulder area.
  4. 4 Secure control with a crossface, underhook, or seatbelt grip depending on their defensive posture.
  5. 5 Maintain pressure and begin threatening back takes by working your hook in or transition to armlocks if they defend the back.

Common mistakes

  • × Sitting upright with weight too far back, allowing the bottom player to bump and create space for an elbow escape or shrimp.
  • × Leaving the posted foot too far from the opponent's hip, which creates a gap they can use to re-guard or slide their knee through.
  • × Failing to keep the top knee tight to the shoulder, letting the bottom player turn back flat and recover full guard or half guard.
