Saddle Defense
Escape
The Saddle Defense is an escape used when an opponent has secured the inside sankaku (saddle/honeyhole) position on your leg, threatening heel hooks and other inside leg attacks. The goal is to clear the entanglement before submissions are locked, transitioning to safer positions such as outside ashi garami, cross ashi garami, or taking the back.
Quick Reference
Key principles
- · Address the threat immediately—the saddle is a high-danger position, so begin escaping before grips on the foot are secured.
- · Control the attacking hands first to prevent heel hook entries while you work to free your trapped knee.
- · Use boot and pant-leg grip fighting (or skin grips in no-gi) to strip foot control before clearing the leg triangle.
- · Hip escape and rotate toward the trapped knee to reduce the bite of the inside sankaku and create space to extract your leg.
- · Anticipate the opponent pulling you back in by backstopping with your free leg on their hip.
Execution
- 1 Immediately two-on-one their grip on your trapped foot, stripping or peeling their hands to prevent heel hook attacks.
- 2 Post your free foot on their hip and hip escape away to create distance and reduce the angle of the saddle lock.
- 3 Rotate your trapped knee inward (toward the opponent) while driving your hips back to slip your knee through the triangle formed by their legs.
- 4 As your leg clears, either re-engage by threading into outside ashi garami or cross ashi garami for your own attacks, or if they turn away, advance to back control.
Common mistakes
- × Focusing on pulling the leg straight out without rotating the knee inward, which keeps the triangle tight and wastes energy.
- × Neglecting hand fighting and trying to escape the leg entanglement while the opponent already has heel hook grips, leading to submission before the escape completes.
- × Pushing away without controlling their hips with the free foot, allowing the opponent to follow your retreat and re-secure the saddle.
