Grip Break
Counter
The grip break is a counter used to strip an opponent's body lock (clasped hands around your torso) and transition to a clinch position. It applies whether in gi or no-gi and is essential when an opponent secures a tight body lock from the front or rear, threatening takedowns or compression.
Quick Reference
Key principles
- · Attack the weakest point of the grip—the fingers and the junction where the hands clasp together.
- · Use two-on-one leverage against the opponent's single wrist or hand to maximize breaking force.
- · Create space with posture and hip movement before attempting to strip the grip.
- · Anticipate the opponent re-clasping immediately and transition to clinch control the instant the grip breaks.
- · Timing the break when the opponent shifts weight or attempts a lift makes their grip most vulnerable.
Execution
- 1 Identify the clasping hand (the hand that grips the wrist) and secure it with both of your hands using a two-on-one grip on their wrist.
- 2 Expand your torso by taking a deep breath, straightening your posture, and driving your hips forward to create slack in their lock.
- 3 Peel their clasping hand off by driving it toward their fingertips—pulling perpendicular to the grip line—while simultaneously twisting your torso away.
- 4 As the grip breaks, immediately pummel one underhook in and secure a collar tie or overhook on the opposite side to establish your clinch.
- 5 Circle your hips away from their remaining grip side to prevent them from re-establishing the body lock.
Common mistakes
- × Trying to pull the hands apart by spreading your arms outward instead of targeting the specific clasping hand, wasting energy without breaking the grip.
- × Breaking the grip but freezing afterward, allowing the opponent to immediately re-clasp rather than transitioning straight into clinch control.
- × Hunching forward while attempting the break, which actually tightens the body lock and gives the opponent better leverage for a takedown.
