Modified Canto Choke
The Canto choke is a lapel strangle created by Brazilian judoka Flavio Canto, built on feeding the opponent's own collar around their neck and locking it off from top positions such as side control, north-south, and turtle rides. It arrives with little warning — the grip looks like routine collar control until the lapel is fed, at which point the strangle is already structurally finished.
Quick Reference
Key principles
- · The opponent's own lapel is the choking tool: pull it free, feed it across or behind the neck, and the fabric replaces everything an arm would normally do.
- · The feed happens under the cover of ordinary top pressure — the choke's strength is that it looks like grip fighting until it is too late.
- · Once fed, the finishing hand anchors the lapel tight to the neck and your body movement, not your arms, applies the strangle.
- · It travels: side control, north-south, knee on belly, and turtle all offer the same feed, so the choke follows your passing pressure.
- · Control the head or hips through the setup — if they can turn with the feed, the slack returns and the fabric loosens.
Execution
- 1 From a dominant top position in the gi, free the opponent's near lapel from their belt line and pull it taut.
- 2 Feed the lapel across the front of their neck to your other hand, passing it under or behind the head as the position allows.
- 3 Anchor the receiving grip tight to their neck, removing all slack.
- 4 Settle your weight and rotate your torso to apply the strangle through the fabric.
- 5 If they defend the feed, keep the lapel grip as control and re-feed from the next position — the choke chains with your passing.
Common mistakes
- × Choking with arm squeeze instead of finishing with body rotation and posture once the lapel is anchored.
- × Feeding the lapel with slack in it — loose fabric gives them the space to slip a hand inside the loop.
- × Ignoring positional control during the feed, letting them turn into or away from you and unwind the lapel.
