Wilson Moreira

Wilson Moreira was born on March 23, 1994, in the Brazilian state of São Paulo and raised in the city of Itapevi — a nickname that would follow him throughout his competitive career. Long before he set foot on the mats, Moreira was a dedicated football (soccer) player, competing at a state level during his formative years. That foundation in team sport instilled a competitive drive and base athleticism that would translate seamlessly to the demands of high-level grappling.

Unlike many elite competitors who begin training in childhood, Moreira did not encounter jiu-jitsu until adulthood. In April 2012, at 18 years old, a cousin who was already a BJJ practitioner invited him to attend a class at Companhia Jiu-Jitsu, under coaches Gleyton Barroso "Veio" and Marcos Prado "Tigre." That single invitation set in motion one of the most rapid and decorated competitive rises the sport has seen. The late start, rather than a limitation, makes his subsequent trajectory all the more remarkable.

It did not take long for Moreira to recognize that competitive grappling was the path he wanted to pursue seriously. Still holding a white belt, he made a deliberate and ambitious decision: to seek out a higher-level training environment capable of matching his aspirations. He contacted Cicero Costha, one of Brazil's most celebrated BJJ coaches, and earned acceptance into the PSLPB Cicero Costha training group.

PSLPB Cicero Costha — short for Projeto Social Lutando Pelo Bem — ranks among the most decorated competition teams in BJJ history, producing a remarkable number of world champions across belt levels. Entering that environment as a white belt placed Moreira alongside elite athletes and exposed him to a level of technical instruction and competitive preparation that few training groups in the world can offer. The willingness to make that leap so early in his development, before accolades or reputation could open doors, speaks to the single-minded competitive focus that would come to define his career.

Moreira's years competing at purple belt represented a period of near-total dominance on the IBJJF circuit and announced him as one of the most feared prospects in his weight class. The pinnacle of this run came in 2017, when he claimed the IBJJF World Championship title — the most prestigious gi jiu-jitsu competition in the sport. That gold medal anchored an extraordinary 2017 campaign in which Moreira took top honors at every major IBJJF event he entered, a run of form that very few competitors at any belt level have managed to replicate.

He complemented the world title with back-to-back IBJJF European Open titles in 2017 and 2018, demonstrating a consistency at the highest level that went well beyond individual peak performances. In 2018, he added the IBJJF Pan Championship title, completing a sweep of the sport's marquee IBJJF events across his purple belt years. That combination left no ambiguity about his standing in the division and positioned him as a prospect whose ascent to the black belt ranks would be closely watched.

As his competitive ambitions expanded, Moreira began traveling to the United States to contest the sport's top events. That trajectory brought him into contact with Murilo Santana, head coach of Unity Jiu-Jitsu in New York City. The connection was a natural one: Unity JJ shares deep institutional ties with PSLPB Cicero Costha, and the two organizations have long functioned as complementary environments for athletes developing across both continents.

Moreira began working simultaneously with both PSLPB in Brazil and Unity JJ in New York, drawing on the resources, coaching expertise, and competition networks each provided. In 2018, Murilo Santana and Paulo Miyao promoted him to brown belt in the United States — a moment that reflected the genuinely transatlantic nature of his development. At brown belt, he continued performing at an elite level, earning gold at the IBJJF Pan Championship and finishing as runner-up at the IBJJF World Championship No-Gi, confirming that his purple belt dominance was no anomaly.

In June 2019, Cicero Costha and Murilo Santana jointly promoted Moreira to black belt in a ceremony that honored both pillars of his competitive formation. The dual promotion reflected the dual-team identity — PSLPB Cicero Costha and Unity Jiu-Jitsu — that had become a defining feature of who Wilson Moreira is as a competitor and as a martial artist.
