Washington Luis

Washington Luis Lima was born on January 26, 1989, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. His path to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was forged through adversity — growing up in a household marked by domestic abuse, he sought a practical means to protect his mother, a search that ultimately brought him to the gentle art.

At the age of 10, Washington joined the Complexo do Lins social project, a community initiative that proved to be a pivotal turning point in his life. There, he stepped onto the mats for the first time — not driven by competitive ambition, but by a genuine need for self-sufficient protection. The project introduced him to two accomplished black belts who recognized his potential and invested deeply in his development: César Guimarães, widely known as "Casquinha," and Leonardo Ligeirinho. Their mentorship transformed what began as necessity into a lifelong pursuit.

Washington Luis Lima's entire belt journey — from white through black — unfolded under a single instructor: César Guimarães, known as "Casquinha." That continuity of guidance, rare in the competitive BJJ landscape, built a technically sound and philosophically grounded foundation for Washington's game.

The primary home for this development was Top Brother, one of the most recognized BJJ academies on the Rio de Janeiro circuit, founded by Casquinha himself. Years of consistent, disciplined training within that environment culminated in Washington receiving his black belt promotion in 2011 — a milestone that recognized both his technical evolution and his unwavering commitment to the sport.

During his time at Top Brother, one of Washington's most formative training partnerships was with Patrick Gaudio. When Gaudio transitioned to GF Team in pursuit of a more competitive environment, Washington followed. The move placed him under the instruction of Júlio César Pereira, who continued to sharpen Washington's technical game and prepared him for the demands of the international black belt circuit.

Open Division Results and Early Black Belt Success

Representing GF Team on the international stage, Washington Luis Lima established himself as one of the most active and consistent black belt competitors on the IBJJF circuit. In the open division, he earned notable results including a gold medal at the 2015 IBJJF Pan Jiu-Jitsu No-Gi Championship and a bronze-medal finish at the 2016 IBJJF World Jiu-Jitsu No-Gi Championship.

Masters Division Dominance

It was in the Masters division, however, where Washington truly came into his own. The year 2019 marked the peak of his competitive output and the clearest demonstration of his mastery at that level. That year, he captured double World title honors — winning gold at the IBJJF Masters World Championship in the gi and claiming the top spot at the IBJJF World Championship No-Gi in the Masters division. Two World titles within the same calendar year cemented his reputation as one of the premier Masters-level competitors in the sport.

Beyond those headline results, 2019 saw Washington accumulate victories across both the IBJJF and UAEJJF circuits, including a gold medal at the 2019 UAEJJF Grand Slam Los Angeles and tournament wins at the IBJJF Dallas Spring Open, the IBJJF Austin Summer Open, and the IBJJF New Orleans Summer Open. Competing in the Pluma division (64 kg / 141.5 lbs), he demonstrated the sustained competitive presence that defines elite Masters-level athletes.

After years of traveling to the United States to compete at the World Championships, Washington Luis Lima made the move permanent in 2014, accepting a coaching position in Boston, Massachusetts. There, he joined GF Team colleague Robson Mau-Mau in building a competitive training program on the East Coast — marking his formal transition into athlete development alongside his own competing.

Washington later relocated to Houston, Texas, where he took on a leadership role at Paradigm Training Center – Southwest, a GF Team affiliate. In that capacity, he established a competitive culture consistent with the team's standards, developing athletes while maintaining his own involvement in the sport. His move to the United States reflects a broader GF Team initiative to expand coaching infrastructure and athlete development across North America, with Washington serving as one of its key figures in the southern region.
