Fernandes began his training at Academia Oriênte in Niterói, a gym that proved to be fertile ground for extraordinary talent. With only eight months of training behind him, the nine-year-old entered his first tournament and submitted two of his three opponents — a performance that hinted at the competitor he would become. By the age of ten, he had already claimed his first national title, setting the pace for a career defined by early excellence.

Academia Oriênte's legacy as a producer of elite talent speaks to the exceptional environment in which Fernandes developed. The gym has produced fighters of the caliber of Ramon Lemos, Gilbert Durinho, Rafael Barros, and Welton Ribeiro — the latter going on to serve as coach to Thales Leites — among many others.

At 14, Thiago Fernandes and his closest friend and training partner Rafael Barros made a deliberate decision to seek out a team with a stronger adult competition focus. Under the guidance of head coach André Pederneiras, Fernandes' jiu-jitsu grew into something exceptional. In 1998, at 15 years of age and holding a green belt, he approached Pederneiras with an audacious request: permission to compete in the blue belt juvenile category at the World Championships. Pederneiras agreed. What followed was a dominant performance — Fernandes defeated nine opponents in a single day, submitting four of them, secured gold in his weight category, and placed third in the open weight division.

Despite the success, Fernandes left the absolute division dissatisfied. As a light-featherweight competing against larger opponents, he felt he had left something on the table. Shortly after the World Championships, at the Brazilian Nationals, he returned with renewed intensity and won both the weight category and the open weight division — a full redemption and then some.

In 1999, the 16-year-old returned to the World Championships and again claimed gold in his weight class. His performance was so impressive that he received his purple belt directly on the podium — one of the sport's most meaningful honors. By 2001, his progression continued with a second-place finish at the ADCC Brazilian Trials, a tournament stacked with established black belts, world champions, and elite luta livre competitors. He navigated the entire bracket with authority before falling in a closely contested final to teammate and legend Robson Moura. That performance earned Fernandes his brown belt.

Fernandes' development as a complete grappler accelerated significantly after he began training alongside Vitor Ribeiro. The exposure to Ribeiro's training habits opened a new dimension in his game — he began attending wrestling practice sessions alongside Ribeiro and steadily integrated the style into his competitive arsenal, going on to win junior wrestling tournaments as a direct result of this cross-training.

The impact of this expanded approach became evident in no-gi competition, where Fernandes produced results that defied his age and belt rank. As a 17-year-old purple belt, he defeated several established black belt competitors in no-gi tournaments, most notably nine-time world champion Ricardo Vieira and luta livre representative Maicon Alarcão. These were not symbolic victories — they were decisive performances against athletes who had reached the sport's highest levels.

In 2001, Fernandes won the Audicom No-Gi Championship, adding to a record that already spanned multiple disciplines. That same year, he also claimed a bronze medal at the Budokan Cup in luta livre — a testament to how fully he had embraced grappling as a whole rather than jiu-jitsu in isolation. Across gi, no-gi, wrestling, and luta livre, Fernandes had established himself as one of the most versatile young grapplers in Brazil.

His schedule during his teenage years was extraordinary in its demands. Each morning he attended high school from 7am until midday. From there, he boarded a bus to complete strength and conditioning sessions with Coach Paulo Caruso. In February 2001, Thiago Fernandes and his father lost their lives in a car crash while returning home from the ADCC Brazilian Trials. The news sent a wave of grief through the jiu-jitsu community, reaching across academy lines and rivalries. Friends, family members, and athletes from teams throughout Brazil gathered at the funeral to pay their respects to the young prodigy.

Thiago Fernandes was buried in his kimono. In a final act of tribute, master André Pederneiras placed upon his coffin the black belt that Thiago had dedicated his life to earning — a gesture that captured, in a single moment, everything his journey had meant.
