Maxwell's competitive record spans multiple belt levels and age divisions, reflecting a sustained commitment to testing his skills on the mat well into his career. His early tournament success came at the national level, where he claimed the US National Championship under the GJJTA at purple belt in 1997, then returned the following year to finish as runner-up at the same event in 1998.
As Maxwell progressed through the belt ranks, his results on the international stage grew more prominent. At the 1999 Pan Jiu-Jitsu IBJJF Championship, he won gold at purple belt, demonstrating that his game translated effectively to the sport's larger competitive platforms. He backed that performance with a return to the podium at the 2000 Pan Jiu-Jitsu IBJJF Championship at brown belt, and in the same year claimed the International Masters and Seniors Championship in both the weight and absolute divisions at the senior 3 level, also at brown belt.
Following his black belt promotion, Maxwell continued competing at the highest levels of masters competition. He won gold at the 2002 Pan Jiu-Jitsu IBJJF Championship and again at the 2004 Pan Jiu-Jitsu IBJJF Championship in the black belt senior division, while also capturing the International Masters and Seniors Championship at black belt senior 2 in 2002. His competitive run culminated with another Pan American gold at the 2006 Pan Jiu-Jitsu IBJJF Championship in the black belt senior division — a testament to the durability and effectiveness of his technical game across decades of competition.
