At the 2005 Pan Jiu-Jitsu IBJJF Championship, she earned a third-place finish at blue belt — a result that signaled her potential as a world-class competitor. Three consecutive years of podium finishes at the Pan Americans made it clear that Sophia had outgrown her training environment. She relocated to Las Vegas, Nevada, to train under Robert Drysdale, one of BJJ's most decorated black belt competitors.
