Silvana Abreu

Silvana Abreu was born on April 9, 1981, in Nova Iguaçu, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil — and her path to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was shaped more by circumstance than intention. On March 14, 1997, at the age of 16, she stepped onto the mats for the first time under the guidance of Rogerio "Lello" Oliveira, beginning what would quietly evolve into a lifelong commitment to the sport.

In those early years, Silvana trained without particular ambition, approaching the mat casually rather than with a competitor's eye. The shift came when she witnessed Alessandra Oliveira compete — a moment that acted as a genuine catalyst. From that point forward, Silvana redirected her focus entirely toward BJJ, channeling a new sense of purpose that would carry her through every rank she held.

White to Brown: Building a Foundation With Lello

Rogerio "Lello" Oliveira guided Silvana from white belt through brown belt, a span marked by steady development and competitive results that validated her growth at every stage. At blue belt, she captured the Brazilian National Championship in the juvenile division in 1998 and again in 2000, then added the World Championship (CBJJ/IBJJF) title in 2000 — establishing herself early as a competitor of both national and international caliber.

Her purple belt years proved equally productive. Brazilian National Championship titles in 2002, 2003, and 2004 — the last of which included the open weight division — confirmed her place among Brazil's elite and signaled a competitor operating at the peak of her potential.

Transitioning to Brasil 021 and the Black Belt Milestone

At brown belt, Silvana made the pivotal decision to join Brasil 021, the team led by André "Negão" Terencio. The move sharpened her preparation, and her results reflected it. In 2005, she won both the weight and absolute divisions at the Brazilian National Championship at brown belt, and claimed the World Cup title (CBJJO) in the brown belt division that same year — a commanding performance across two major competitions.

It was within the environment of Brasil 021 that André "Negão" Terencio awarded Silvana her black belt, the culmination of a journey that had begun nearly a decade earlier on the mats of Nova Iguaçu.

The 2005 Bout Against Kyra Gracie

Among the competitive moments that defined Silvana's career, her 2005 match against Kyra Gracie stands as one of the most telling. The bout ended 0x0 with the decision awarded to Gracie, but the scoreline understates what unfolded — a tightly contested exchange between two of the most capable women in the division at that time. Following her black belt promotion, personal difficulties pulled Silvana away from competition for several years. Her return in 2009, however, carried no sign of rust. She earned a silver medal at the State Championship before going on to capture the South American Championship (FJJE) at black belt in both the weight and absolute divisions — a statement performance that confirmed her competitive quality had endured through the absence.
