In 2007, Sergio Zimmermann made a pivotal decision, relocating to Lisbon, Portugal, to pursue academic studies in high performance sports. Over five years embedded in the Portuguese BJJ scene, he began building the competitive record that would eventually earn him widespread international recognition.
In 2012, Zimmermann made a further move to Germany, leveraging his dual Brazilian-German nationality to plant lasting roots and build something enduring. His impact on the European circuit proved transformative. With victories documented in 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2013, and 2014, Sergio accumulated between 11 and 12 IBJJF European Championship titles across multiple divisions and age categories — spanning adult and Master divisions as well as both weight and absolute formats. That haul of European gold places him among the most decorated competitors in the history of the IBJJF European Championship. Zimmermann rounded out his mastery of the European competitive calendar by capturing the European No-Gi Championship at Master 2 in 2016, demonstrating that his excellence extended well beyond the gi format.
