Rafael Borges

Rafael Borges was born in August 2004 in Piracicaba, a city in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. Before discovering jiu-jitsu, he channeled his competitive energy into football (soccer), pursuing the sport with enthusiasm throughout his early childhood. At the age of 8, after Borges began gaining weight, his father, Osvaldo Borges, enrolled him in jiu-jitsu classes under family friend Flávio Pascoalatto — his first instructor on the mats.

The transition was not without friction. Borges developed a genuine dislike for the Gentle Art in those early sessions, a sentiment that gradually gave way as his instruction passed to André Cavalcante. Under Cavalcante's guidance, Borges discovered a deepening passion for the sport — one that proved contagious within his own family. Moved by his son's growing commitment, Osvaldo Borges took up jiu-jitsu himself and eventually earned a black belt in the martial art.

As Borges accumulated competition results and matured as an athlete, he sought a more structured and professional environment to sharpen his development. In 2021, as a juvenile purple belt, he joined Dream Art, a professional squad based in São Paulo. Training under Lucas Gualberto and Isaque Bahiense, Borges refined his technical game and built an increasingly impressive résumé at major tournaments.

His tenure at Dream Art proved highly productive. In June 2023, Borges received his brown belt — a milestone that capped a dominant purple belt career and signaled the start of an equally formidable chapter at the next level. In September 2023, after two years with the team, he made a strategic transition to Fratres, a professional outfit also headquartered in São Paulo.

The 2024 season under Fratres represented the pinnacle of his colored belt journey. After delivering gold medal performances at both the IBJJF World and Pan Championships at brown belt, teammate Meyram Maquine promoted Borges to black belt on May 31 — a ceremony that unfolded on the podium of the IBJJF World Championship itself. For a competitor who had spent years dominating that stage, the setting could not have been more fitting.

Few athletes of their generation have assembled a colored belt résumé as comprehensive as Rafael Borges, who competes in the Peso Médio division (82.30 kg / 181.5 lbs). His record across purple and brown belt spans multiple organizations and formats, reflecting both technical consistency and an exceptional ability to perform under pressure at the sport's highest-profile events.

At purple belt, Borges claimed gold at the 2023 IBJJF World Championship and the 2023 IBJJF Pan Jiu-Jitsu Championship, establishing himself as one of the premier competitors in his division on the global stage. He extended his reach beyond IBJJF competition by capturing the 2022 IBJJF Pan Jiu-Jitsu No-Gi Championship title and gold at the 2022 IBJJF American Nationals, while also securing multiple CBJJ Brazilian Nationals titles at the same belt level.

The move to brown belt brought no slowdown. Borges delivered back-to-back double gold performances, winning both the 2024 IBJJF World Championship and the 2024 IBJJF Pan Jiu-Jitsu Championship — mirroring precisely the titles he had claimed the year prior at purple belt. AJP Grand Slam victories in Rio de Janeiro further demonstrated his effectiveness on the international circuit beyond IBJJF competition.

His accomplishments across gi and no-gi formats speak to a well-rounded technical arsenal and a sustained capacity for high-level performance across multiple competitive years. The black belt promotion ceremony on the World Championship podium on May 31 served as a symbolic exclamation point on a colored belt career defined by relentless excellence.
