Paulo Jardim

Paulo Tarcisio Pessoa Jardim was born on July 4, 1983, in João Pessoa, the capital of Paraíba in northeastern Brazil. His journey into Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu began at the age of 15, sparked by an unlikely source — his brother José Carlos. Though José Carlos never trained BJJ himself, he understood the value of self-defense and connected Paulo with a training partner at a local gym, setting in motion what would become a lifelong commitment to the sport.

Paulo's first instructor was Nivaldo Cordeiro, a black belt under the legendary grappling figure Ivan Gomes. Training under Cordeiro gave Paulo a disciplined technical foundation, while the competitive environment of Paraíba shaped the regional identity that would define much of his career on the mats.

As Paulo's game matured, he transitioned to a new gym under Luiz Barboza, who became the central figure in his competitive development. Under Barboza's guidance, Paulo earned his blue, purple, and brown belts with a consistency that mirrored his growing results on the competition circuit. He also trained extensively alongside Helder Medeiros, one of Paraíba's most respected instructors, further broadening his technical arsenal.

On February 16, 2008, Paulo Tarcisio reached a defining milestone when Leonardo Vieira and Ricardo Vieira — two of the founding pillars of Checkmat — promoted him to black belt. The promotion formally aligned Paulo with one of Brazil's most elite and competitive BJJ teams, opening the most decorated chapter of his athletic career.

Few competitors have left as lasting an imprint on their home state as Paulo Tarcisio did in Paraíba. Over nearly a decade, he claimed nine Paraíba State Championship titles — winning consecutively from 2001 through 2008 and returning to capture the title again in 2010. This remarkable run of consistency across multiple belt levels established him as the undisputed standard-bearer of BJJ from the region.

His dominance extended well beyond state lines. Paulo also claimed two North/Northeast Regional Championship titles, in 2002 and 2009, reinforcing his standing as the premier competitor across the broader northeastern Brazilian circuit. These achievements were not merely stepping stones — they reflected the competitive culture Paulo helped cultivate in Paraíba and laid the groundwork for his ascent onto the national and international stage.

Paulo Tarcisio announced his readiness for elite competition even before receiving his black belt. In 2006, he earned a bronze medal at the BJJ World Championship while competing at brown belt — a result that signaled his capacity to contend with the sport's best. His black belt promotion year of 2008 proved immediately productive: he claimed the South American Championship title and added a bronze medal at the Rio Open, demonstrating versatility across different competitive formats.

His black belt career continued to build momentum in the years that followed. At the SP Cup in 2010, Paulo secured another bronze medal in the Pesado (94kg) division. In 2011, he achieved his most prominent national result — a silver medal at the Brazilian National Championship, a runner-up finish that represents the peak of his black belt record on the national circuit. That same year, a third-place finish at the World Pro Cup Trials in Gramado reaffirmed his sustained relevance among Brazil's most competitive practitioners.
