Omar Alsuwaidi

Omar AlSuwaidi was born in April 2003 in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, into a family with deep roots in the world of grappling. As a child, Omar showed little interest in organized sports, but his teenage years brought a drive to find an activity that could challenge him both mentally and physically. He found that outlet in jiu-jitsu, stepping onto the mats for the first time in 2016 at the age of 14.

His introduction to the sport came under Samuel Herzog Canquerino, a black belt from the Sul Jiu-Jitsu Academy who had relocated from Brazil to the UAE. Canquerino proved to be a defining early influence, instilling the technical habits and competitive mindset that would shape Omar's trajectory for years to come. The family environment surrounding Omar reinforced that foundation — his brother, Mohamed AlSuwaidi, is a well-known grappler in his own right, and the shared pursuit of jiu-jitsu within the household provided both motivation and a high standard to chase from the outset.

As Omar advanced through the colored belt ranks, his coaching team evolved in step with his competitive ambitions. Upon reaching purple belt, he began working with Abdulmunam Al Hashmi and Helder Medeiros — known in the community by the nickname "Sponge Bob" — who guided his development through the upper amateur divisions. Representing Al Wahda Club on the Abu Dhabi Jiu-Jitsu Pro (AJP) circuit, Omar built one of the most consistent competitive résumés in his generation.

A Decorated Amateur Career

His colored-belt record reflects that consistency at every stage. As a juvenile in 2019, he announced his potential early with Grand Slam gold at AJP events in Moscow, Abu Dhabi, and London. At blue belt, he claimed gold at the AJP Abu Dhabi World Pro in 2020 — a result he replicated at purple belt in 2021. His brown belt years carried the same momentum: a silver medal at the AJP Abu Dhabi World Pro in 2022 set the stage for a gold medal performance at the same event in 2023, the result that directly earned him his black belt promotion. With Helder Medeiros and Abdulmunam Al Hashmi formally recognizing his progress by the end of 2023, Omar AlSuwaidi completed the transition from decorated amateur to professional competitor.

Omar AlSuwaidi competes in the 56kg weight division on the AJP Tour, and his transition to the black belt professional ranks proved seamless. The 2024 season marked a breakthrough of exceptional scope: Omar captured AJP Grand Slam gold in Riyadh, Tokyo, and Moscow within a single calendar year, establishing himself as the dominant force in his division on the international circuit. That trio of Grand Slam victories, paired with a silver medal at the AJP Grand Slam in Istanbul the same year, earned him recognition as the number one ranked athlete in Asia by the AJP Tour for 2024 — a landmark achievement for both Omar personally and for jiu-jitsu across the Gulf region.

Building a Legacy on the AJP Circuit

His momentum carried into 2025, where he reached the final of the AJP Grand Slam in Rome, adding another silver medal to a professional record defined by podium finishes at the sport's highest levels. Representing both the UAE and Al Wahda Club, Omar's career arc — from juvenile Grand Slam titles in 2019 through colored-belt World Pro dominance and into black belt Grand Slam victories — illustrates a rare degree of sustained competitive excellence across every stage of development. His rise has meaningfully elevated the international profile of UAE jiu-jitsu and stands as one of the sport's most compelling stories to emerge from the AJP circuit in recent years.
