Muhammad Mokaev

Muhammad Mokaev was born in Dagestan, a republic within Russia long celebrated as one of the world's most fertile grounds for wrestling and grappling talent. At age 12, he arrived in Britain as a refugee, establishing the United Kingdom as his adopted home and the country he would go on to represent competitively. Dagestani culture carries a deep tradition of wrestling — one that shaped Mokaev's athletic identity from the outset and informed the grappling-heavy style he would carry into the highest levels of professional MMA.

The foundation built across those formative years proved remarkably durable. As of September 2026, Mokaev had maintained an unbeaten record across 40 combined amateur and professional matches — a figure that speaks to sustained competitive development and a refusal to absorb losses at any level of the sport.

Establishing a Grappling Identity

Mokaev entered the UFC flyweight division with a wrestling-heavy base that immediately distinguished him from the field. His durability under submission pressure came into sharp focus at UFC 286 in 2023, when he survived a deep kneebar attempt — a moment that underlined both the danger he regularly navigated and the lower-body submission defense he had developed. Later that year, he was scheduled to face Tim Elliott at UFC 294 in October 2023.

The Manel Kape Victory

His most significant UFC victory came on July 27, 2024, at UFC 304, where he defeated Manel Kape by decision — a result that carried particular weight given Kape's ranking at number two in the flyweight division. Mokaev pushed back against any characterization of himself as a passive fighter, noting a roughly 60% finish rate across his UFC tenure. "From 21 to 23, I beat all these guys. Even Manuel Kape, and he is ranked number two right now. I really don't understand the politics. I really don't know. I wish I knew the full story behind everything."

Release and Departure

That finish rate became a point of contention. Reports emerged that the UFC had instructed his manager to steer Mokaev away from his wrestling-heavy approach because the promotion did not want "a decision guy" — a directive Mokaev and his team contested. In July 2024, the UFC released him. Following the departure, Dana White publicly indicated that Mokaev was unwelcome at the promotion due to how he had treated staff.

Beyond the Cage

Mokaev's engagement with grappling has never been confined to the MMA cage. He has competed on the submission grappling circuit, bringing his wrestling-based style into a format governed by pure submission rules — and encountering both success and friction along the way.

On March 11, 2026, Mokaev faced Arman Tsarukyan in a submission grappling match at Hype Brazil. Tsarukyan defeated Mokaev via technical submission — a rear-naked choke — at 7:46 of Round 1. The contest was a grappling competition entirely separate from Mokaev's MMA record and does not factor into his unbeaten professional MMA ledger.

Controversies on the Mat

His grappling history has not been without incident. He was disqualified from a BJJ tournament after slamming his opponent from closed guard — a technique prohibited under sport BJJ rulesets. He also faced accusations of executing a fake tap in competition, a charge that generated considerable debate within the grappling community. A planned submission grappling match with Raul Rosas Jr. was canceled; Mokaev attributed the cancellation to UFC interference. Taken together, these episodes reflect a fighter whose grappling identity extends meaningfully beyond MMA into the broader submission sports ecosystem, albeit not without controversy.

The Musumeci Offer

Despite his acrimonious departure from the promotion, Mokaev found himself drawn back into the UFC's orbit through its UFC BJJ initiative. On February 10, 2026, he announced via social media that he had been offered a UFC BJJ title match against reigning bantamweight champion Mikey Musumeci. The UFC did not publicly confirm the offer, and Musumeci was already scheduled to defend his title against Shay Montague at UFC BJJ 5 on February 12, 2026 at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas.

In a September 2026 interview with BBC Sport, Mokaev disclosed the financial terms of that offer: $10,000 — a figure he considered unacceptably low relative to his competitive standing. He declined, but acknowledged he would have accepted had the compensation been more meaningful. The episode illustrated the gap between the UFC's valuation of Mokaev's market position post-release and his own assessment of his worth.

The Miyao Collapse

A separate UFC BJJ matchmaking effort involving Joao Miyao reportedly collapsed after Claudia Gadelha disclosed Miyao's financial demands to Musumeci — an anecdote that shed light on the fragile and occasionally chaotic behind-the-scenes dynamics governing UFC BJJ negotiations. For Mokaev, these failed matchmaking attempts represented yet another chapter in an ongoing struggle to remain active in high-profile grappling competition on terms he found acceptable.

Competing Accounts

The circumstances surrounding Mokaev's July 2024 UFC release generated competing accounts. Reports alleged that his manager Tim Simpson had been engaged in negotiations with the PFL during Mokaev's time under UFC contract, contributing to the promotion's decision to release him. Simpson explicitly refuted those claims, describing them as "completely false." Reports also pointed to the UFC's dissatisfaction with Mokaev's wrestling-heavy approach, with suggestions that the promotion had internally communicated a preference for a more finish-oriented style. Mokaev defended his record and expressed genuine bewilderment at the internal politics behind his exit.

Stalled Return Negotiations

In the months that followed, Mokaev maintained contact with UFC matchmakers Hunter Campbell and Sean Shelby through a WhatsApp group — a channel that kept dialogue alive around a potential return even as concrete terms remained elusive. His frustration with the process was clear. "Hunter made me a promise. They basically wasted two years of my life," he stated, adding that the terms for a UFC return felt as though they kept shifting beneath him.

Throughout this period, Mokaev emphasized his determination to stay active. Turning 26 around September 2026, he framed his situation with a long-horizon perspective: "Most people start their careers at this age. I'm going to do what's best for my family." His trajectory — a Dagestani-born fighter who arrived in Britain as a refugee, built a formidable unbeaten MMA record, and found himself navigating the contested territory between MMA promotions, submission grappling circuits, and the UFC BJJ format — reflects the broader tensions facing grappling-oriented fighters who resist easy categorization within the commercial structures of modern combat sports.
