Maximiliano Carvalho

Maximiliano Carvalho was born on July 26, 1979, in Recife, Brazil, into a world far removed from combat sports. His early interests leaned toward action films and computer games, and his athletic pursuits centered on football rather than martial arts. He did not pursue any formal combat sports training during his youth, making his eventual path to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu all the more unconventional.

The turning point came through exposure to the early UFC events, where Royce Gracie's dominant performances in open-weight tournament competition revealed the raw effectiveness of grappling and submission fighting. Inspired by what he witnessed, Carvalho sought out a jiu-jitsu gym near his home in Brazil and began training in earnest. There, he came under the instruction of José Olímpio, widely known as Zé Radiola — a coach who would go on to define every major chapter of his BJJ development.

Carvalho's relocation to Hungary traces back to a pivotal connection forged in 2003, when a Hungarian practitioner named Zákonyi Bence traveled to Brazil and invited Zé Radiola to conduct seminars in Hungary. Those seminars planted the seeds for a significant expansion of BJJ across Central Europe. Recognizing the opportunity to establish the art in a largely untapped region, Carvalho made the decision to move to Hungary in 2004 with the mission of founding a ZR Team affiliate academy there.

His arrival marked one of the earliest organized BJJ presences in Central Europe, earning him recognition as a genuine pioneer of the sport in Hungary. What began as a single affiliate grew steadily as Carvalho's reputation as a coach spread through the European grappling community, attracting additional ZR Team affiliates across the continent. Despite his Brazilian roots, Carvalho adopted Hungary as his competitive home, representing the country in international competition and serving as a direct bridge between the South American origins of BJJ and its expanding European community.

Throughout his entire development as a jiu-jitsu practitioner, Carvalho trained exclusively under Zé Radiola — a relationship that speaks to the depth of trust and loyalty at the core of his BJJ journey. As a member of ZR Team's international grappling association, Carvalho embodied the technical identity and values of the Radiola lineage at every stage of his progression.

In November 2007, Zé Radiola awarded Carvalho his black belt, formally recognizing the years of dedication and technical refinement that had defined his time on the mats. Competing in the Meio Pesado division at 88.30 kg (195.0 lbs), Carvalho went on to carry the ZR Team standard into tournaments across multiple continents, representing that lineage at the highest levels of European and international competition.

As a black belt competing on behalf of Hungary, Maximiliano Carvalho built one of the most consistent competitive records among European-based grapplers of his generation, performing across both gi and no-gi formats on major international circuits. His career trajectory from 2013 through at least 2018 reflects a sustained commitment to elite-level competition rather than a single peak moment.

Breaking Through on the International Stage

Carvalho announced himself internationally in 2013 by capturing gold in the Absolute division at the IBJJF London International Open and adding a third-place finish at the IBJJF Pans No-Gi Open — an early demonstration that his game translated effectively across different competitive environments. By 2015, he had assembled a remarkable haul within a single calendar year, winning the UKBJJF British National Championship, the UKBJJF British National No-Gi Championship, and the IBJJF Munich Winter International Open, while also reaching the podium in the Absolute categories of the British Nationals in both gi and no-gi formats.

Masters Career and International Reach

The 2017 season represented a high point in his Masters competition career, as Carvalho claimed back-to-back titles at the IBJJF International Masters European Championship and the IBJJF European No-Gi Open, confirming his standing as one of the premier competitors in his age and weight category on the continent. His performances at UAE JJ Federation events further underscored his international reach, with a second-place finish at the 2016 UAEJJF Grand Slam Tour London and a third-place result at the 2016 UAEJJF Abu Dhabi Pro in the Master 1 division. Multiple podium finishes at the IBJJF European Open across different years and Master divisions cemented a legacy of competitive longevity that extended well beyond any single tournament cycle.
