At the age of 10, he moved to his grandparents' house in the North Zone of Rio de Janeiro — a shift that placed him in an environment where martial arts culture ran deep. There, his uncle introduced him to jiu-jitsu, igniting a lifelong commitment to the sport. The North Zone community, steeped in grappling tradition, provided the foundation upon which Pereira would build one of the most well-rounded careers in Brazilian jiu-jitsu.

Few aspects of Maurício Pereira's career carry as much weight as his unbroken relationship with Laerte Barcelos, his first and only jiu-jitsu instructor. From his earliest days on the mat through every belt promotion, Barcelos guided Pereira's development within a single lineage — a traditional path that reflects both the depth of their mentorship and the consistency of Pereira's commitment. That journey culminated on December 21, 1997, when Barcelos promoted him to black belt, completing a belt progression built entirely under one roof.

Beyond technique and competition, Barcelos instilled a philosophy of cross-training, actively encouraging his students to pursue freestyle wrestling alongside jiu-jitsu. Pereira embraced this approach wholeheartedly, competing in wrestling at a high level throughout the 1990s. As a blue belt, he began taking on coaching responsibilities — initially assisting Barcelos before running his own independent sessions. In jiu-jitsu, he captured Rio de Janeiro State Championship titles in 1990, 1991, and 1992, and continued to appear on the podium with a runner-up finish in the 1992 absolute division and a third-place result in 1997. The apex of his jiu-jitsu competitive career came in 1993, when he secured the Brazilian National/Mercosul title — a result that affirmed his standing among the country's top grapplers.

Wrestling Dominance and Cross-Sport Legitimacy

In parallel, Pereira pursued wrestling with equal seriousness, winning the Rio de Janeiro State Wrestling Championship in each year from 1990 through 1993. That sustained dominance at the state level set the stage for his appearance at the Brazilian National Wrestling Championship in 1994, where he earned third place — underscoring his legitimacy as a cross-sport athlete. Two years later, in 1997, the same year he received his black belt from Laerte Barcelos, he became an official referee for Rio de Janeiro's federation, formalizing a role he had already been cultivating for some time.

Rising to International Stages

The scope of his officiating expanded significantly in 1999, when he joined the refereeing staff for the CBJJ World Championships — his introduction to international-level officiating. From there, Pereira went on to referee for both the IBJJF and the UAEJJF, the two most prominent federations in global jiu-jitsu, establishing himself as a trusted official across decades and continents. His refereeing career, running parallel to and ultimately outlasting his time as an active competitor, stands as one of the most enduring dimensions of his professional identity in the sport.

Opportunities Deferred

For much of the 2000s and early 2010s, the prospect of taking his coaching career to the UAE presented itself to Maurício Pereira on more than one occasion. Approached with opportunities in both 2009 and 2012, he declined each time, anchored in Rio de Janeiro by a stable and well-paying job. The decisions reflected practical priorities over the appeal of international relocation — a pragmatic calculus that kept him in Brazil through a period when the Abu Dhabi jiu-jitsu scene was expanding rapidly.

Relocation and a New Chapter

Circumstances shifted in 2014 when Pereira lost his job in Rio, altering the equation that had kept him home. In April 2016, he accepted a coaching position in Abu Dhabi and relocated to the United Arab Emirates, beginning a new chapter in a career rooted in Rio de Janeiro for four decades. The move carried additional professional coherence given his existing relationship with the UAEJJF as a referee, integrating his coaching role into a broader presence within the Abu Dhabi jiu-jitsu ecosystem. With the relocation, his country of representation shifted to the United Arab Emirates — a fitting marker of a career that had grown well beyond the North Zone neighborhood where it began.
