Mauricio Togni Antunes was born on March 30, 1983, in São Paulo, Brazil, and went on to become one of the most decorated Master division competitors on the international jiu-jitsu circuit. His path to the sport began not in São Paulo, but in the southern coastal city of Florianópolis, where he relocated to pursue a degree in Social Sciences. It was there, in 2002, that he first stepped onto the mats — drawn in by the influence of his brother.

His earliest training came under Alexandre 'Pop' Souza, whose guidance laid the technical and philosophical foundation for Antunes' development as a grappler. The convergence of academic study and martial arts training during this period proved formative. Analyzing social behavior in the classroom while learning to read and control opponents on the mat, Antunes cultivated a dual fluency in human dynamics — a disciplined, analytical lens that would define his approach to jiu-jitsu throughout his career.

Following the completion of his university studies, Antunes relocated to Ribeirão Preto, in the interior of São Paulo state, where he joined Nucleo Academy and sharpened his competitive edge. In 2013, Antunes joined PSLB – Cicero Costha, training closely under both Cicero Costha and Alexandre de Souza. That year proved to be a watershed moment: he claimed gold at the IBJJF International Masters & Seniors Championship, the CBJJE Brazilian Nationals, and the IBJJF Rio Open — all at brown belt — before receiving his black belt promotion in October 2013.
