Marcos Antonio Cerqueira Batista was born on December 1, 1979, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil — one of the most fertile cities in the world for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu development. He stepped onto the mats for the first time in 1994, beginning his training at the Atletica da Tijuca academy, where he built the technical foundations that would define his career.

His progression through the belt ranks was guided by Carlos Henrique, who awarded Cerqueira his blue belt in 1996, purple belt in 1998, and brown belt in 2001. That steady, deliberate advancement reflected both his dedication and the rigorous standards of Rio's competitive BJJ environment. Beyond Atletica da Tijuca, Cerqueira deepened his education at two of the city's most storied academies: the Carlson Gracie Academy in Copacabana and the Mestre Saporito academy in Lagoa. After settling in Houston, Texas in 2008, Marcos Cerqueira established himself as one of the city's prominent BJJ instructors. He teaches at Brazil-021 Houston, also known as Marcos Cerqueira Jiu-Jitsu — an academy that serves as his primary platform for passing the art to the next generation of practitioners.

The name Brazil-021 carries deliberate cultural weight. The number 021 is the international dialing code for Rio de Janeiro, and its inclusion in the academy's identity reflects Cerqueira's enduring connection to his home city and the BJJ traditions he absorbed there. Cerqueira captured the Gavazza Cup championship and earned a silver medal at the Copa Cyclone – Lagos, demonstrating consistent performance across multiple events at the purple belt level.
