Marcelo Nunes was born on December 21, 1988, in Itú, São Paulo, Brazil, and demonstrated a natural affinity for martial arts from an early age. His first steps in combat sports came through capoeira, which he began practicing at age 10. The discipline and body awareness he cultivated through capoeira laid a meaningful foundation for his eventual grappling development — but it was a television screen, not a training mat, that would change the direction of his life.

At age 12, Nunes watched Royce Gracie compete in the UFC and was immediately captivated by the effectiveness of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Gracie's ability to submit larger, stronger opponents through technique and leverage made a profound impression on the young Nunes, prompting him to leave capoeira behind and commit fully to BJJ. That pivotal moment set the course for a decades-long dedication to the art.

Foundational Years in Brazil

The early stages of Nunes's jiu-jitsu development were shaped decisively by Master Takeyoshi, under whom he trained during his formative years in Brazil. Takeyoshi's contribution extended well beyond technical instruction — he provided Nunes with free tuition, removing financial barriers that might otherwise have ended his training prematurely, and offered the emotional support essential to a young competitor finding his footing in the sport. Nunes has consistently credited Takeyoshi as one of the central figures who made his martial arts career possible.

Representing Brasa Academy during his colored belt years, Nunes built a competitive record that signaled genuine potential. In 2004, he earned a third-place finish at the CBJJ Brazilian Nationals as a juvenile competitor. He then captured back-to-back CBJJE World Championship titles at blue belt in 2006 and 2007, establishing himself as one of the stronger competitors in his age and weight category in Brazil. His momentum carried into brown belt competition, where he claimed gold at the Marianas Open Championship in 2010.

Relocation to the United States and Black Belt Promotion

In 2010, Nunes made the significant decision to relocate to the United States to train under Robert Drysdale — a move that marked a turning point in his development as both a competitor and a martial artist. The investment paid off quickly: in 2011, Drysdale awarded Nunes his black belt, recognizing his technical mastery and competitive accomplishments. Alongside Drysdale and Takeyoshi, Nunes also credits teammate Diego Castelo Branco as a key figure in his journey through the sport.

Establishing Elite Status on the International Circuit

As a black belt, Nunes found his competitive home at Zenith JJ, representing the United States on the international circuit in the super-heavyweight division — known in IBJJF classifications as Pesadíssimo, the weight class above 100.50 kg (222.0 lbs). Competing in the Masters divisions against peers in his age bracket, Nunes produced the most celebrated performances of his career.

The pinnacle came at the 2018 IBJJF Masters World Championship, where he claimed gold — the most prestigious title of his career and a result that affirmed his standing among the elite in his division. He returned to that same stage the following year and again reached the final, earning silver at the 2019 IBJJF Masters World Championship and demonstrating the consistency that defines high-level performance across multiple competitive seasons.

Regional and Continental Titles

Beyond Worlds, Nunes assembled a strong collection of titles throughout the late 2010s. He won gold at the IBJJF Pan Championship in the Master 1 division in 2019 and captured the IBJJF American Nationals title in the Master 1 division in 2018. His dominance on the North American circuit stretched back further, with NAGA Championship victories in 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2015 reflecting sustained excellence over several seasons. In 2014, he also claimed gold at the FIVE Grappling Championship in Miami, adding an early open-format submission grappling title to his résumé.

Nunes's martial arts pursuits have never been confined to the competition mat. Alongside his jiu-jitsu career, he pursued full combat sports competition in both mixed martial arts and Muay Thai — a reflection of the crossover athleticism that characterizes elite BJJ competitors who seek to test themselves across disciplines.
