Luis Sergio Roman was born on May 2, 1964, in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico. His path toward becoming a respected martial artist began at an unusually young age — at 13, he enrolled as a Marine Corps Cadet in Puerto Rico, an experience that introduced him to the fundamentals of hand-to-hand combat and instilled the disciplined, regimented approach to physical development that would define his entire career.
At 18, Roman formally joined the United States Marine Corps, a decision that proved transformative for his martial arts trajectory. During his service, he encountered a Senior Marine holding the rank of Master in Sport Sambo — a meeting that redirected his combat focus entirely. Over the next three years, Roman dedicated himself to Sambo training within the military environment, building a grappling foundation rooted in the Soviet combat system. His proficiency advanced steadily, and after relocating to Camp Pendleton, California, he transitioned from student to instructor, taking on a coaching role in Sambo. Roman left active military service in 1989 to begin a career as a Police Officer in Southern California, carrying with him a deep understanding of combat sports and a proven ability to teach them.
