Louie Cercedez was born on July 6, 1973, in Encino, California, into a household where martial arts were a way of life. His father, Louie Cercedez Sr., was a seasoned martial arts expert who placed his son on the mat almost before the boy could walk — formal training began at the age of two. Under his father's guidance, Cercedez built a rigorous, cross-disciplinary foundation spanning Karate, Boxing, Full Contact Karate, Muay Thai in both its traditional and Dutch styles, Judo, and Kickboxing. That early immersion across multiple combat systems gave him a versatile technical base that would prove essential throughout his career.

His introduction to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu came through a defining encounter in 1979, when a young Cercedez witnessed a demonstration by Rorion Gracie at the North Valley YMCA in Mission Hills, California. The experience left a lasting impression, igniting a spark that would smolder for years. With no local BJJ instruction available at the time, Cercedez carried that inspiration forward — patiently waiting for the right path to open on the mats.

The road back to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu opened in 1993, nearly fourteen years after Cercedez first witnessed Rorion Gracie's demonstration. A chance meeting with Don Partch — a practitioner training under Roy Harris — finally gave Cercedez access to the formal instruction he had long sought. Harris, one of the first American-born BJJ black belts, represented a credible and respected lineage in the art, making him an ideal guide for Cercedez's development.

From that point forward, Cercedez committed fully to the discipline, earning every belt rank exclusively under Roy Harris. That unwavering loyalty to a single instructor's system reflects the depth of the student-teacher bond they built over more than a decade of consistent training. The journey culminated on October 13, 2007, when Roy Harris awarded Cercedez his black belt — a milestone earned through sustained dedication and principled growth.

Affiliated with Ronin BJJ, Cercedez extended his contributions to the art by coaching BJJ at a gym located at 13950 Ventura Blvd in Sherman Oaks, California, passing his lineage's knowledge to a new generation of practitioners.

Before earning his black belt, Cercedez was already testing his martial arts skill under competitive pressure. During the 1990s, he stepped into the early American MMA scene at a time when the sport operated largely outside formal regulation — unified rules and institutional oversight were still years away.
