The structural development of Juan Miguel Iturralde's BJJ career accelerated following Freddy Sukata's departure from Ecuador in 2005. With their primary instructor no longer in the country, Iturralde and his brother Leonardo stepped into coaching roles, maintaining training continuity for a small but dedicated community of practitioners. Before leaving, Sukata awarded Iturralde his purple belt in 2006 — formal recognition of his progress and the authority to guide others on the mat.
Later that year, a transformative development reshaped the Ecuadorian BJJ landscape: Fernando Di Piero, known by his nickname Soluço, relocated to Ecuador and established an affiliate of Alliance Jiu-Jitsu in the country. Di Piero's arrival brought world-class instruction and direct lineage to one of the most respected academies in global BJJ. Under his tutelage, Iturralde's progression gained renewed direction — earning his brown belt in 2008 and his black belt in 2010, both conferred by Fernando Di Piero.
In parallel with his personal belt progression, Iturralde opened his first academy in 2007 — Alliance Samborondon — establishing a formal training institution that served as a hub for competitive development in Ecuador. The academy gave structure and permanence to what had previously been a grassroots effort, positioning Iturralde as both a practitioner and an institution builder. His later association with Globetrotters BJJ reflected a further evolution in his affiliations and a broadening perspective on the sport's global community.
