José Marcello Rodrigues

José Marcello Rodrigues was born on March 17, 1971, in Niterói, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. From an early age, he gravitated toward physical competition, immersing himself in a wide spectrum of sports — volleyball, football, handball, athletics, snowboarding, and surfing — with surfing earning him regional-level recognition. That same competitive drive led him to karate at age 12, where he competed for approximately seven years, building the discipline and mental fortitude that would later define his grappling career.

The path to Brazilian jiu-jitsu opened through his surfing lifestyle. In December 1991, Rodrigues began working at the Redley surf shop in Niterói, where two colleagues — known as "Marcão" and "Cicinho" — were dedicated BJJ practitioners. Their passion for the art proved contagious, and through their encouragement, Rodrigues stepped onto the mats for the first time.

Rodrigues began his official BJJ training in January 1992 at a local gym in Niterói, and the art seized his attention almost immediately. After just two months of training, he entered his first inter-club tournament and submitted a heavier blue belt opponent — an early signal of the competitive instincts that would define his career. From that point, competition became a consistent thread in his BJJ life, with Rodrigues becoming an active participant in the local Liga Niteroiense de Jiu-Jitsu (LINJJI).

His ascent through the ranks was swift. He earned his blue belt in just six months under coach Luiz Paulo and continued training under Paulo's guidance through his brown belt. As his game matured, Rodrigues began training under Sérgio Bolão Souza, one of Rio de Janeiro's most respected black belts. Under Bolão's tutelage, he reached the pinnacle of the belt system, receiving his black belt in December 1997 in a ceremony presided over by the late Carlson Gracie — a milestone that forged a powerful symbolic connection to one of BJJ's most storied lineages.

Throughout the late 1990s and into the early 2000s, Zé Marcello established himself as one of the most formidable competitors in Brazilian jiu-jitsu. His brown belt years were particularly decorated. In 1996, he claimed gold at the CBJJ Brazilian Nationals, earned bronze at the IBJJF World Championships, and placed second in the absolute division at the IBJJF Pan Championships. The following year proved even more productive — in 1997, Rodrigues swept the major circuit, winning the IBJJF World Championships, the IBJJF Pan Championships, the CBJJ BR Team Nationals, and the Super Liga Brasileira JJ, all at brown belt.

The transition to black belt competition sustained his momentum. In 1998, he earned silver at the IBJJF World Championships, placed second at the CBJJO World Cup, and added a bronze at the CBJJ Brazilian Nationals. In 1999, he claimed another bronze at the IBJJF World Championships, and in 2002 he returned to the CBJJO World Cup podium with a second silver.

Years later, Rodrigues demonstrated that his competitive fire had not dimmed. Competing in the Masters division at the 2008 IBJJF European Open, he captured gold in both his weight category and the absolute division — a double victory that underscored the depth of his technical refinement and physical conditioning long after his early competitive peak.

Zé Marcello holds a respected place in European jiu-jitsu history as one of the sport's true continental pioneers. In 1998, following an invitation from his student Yannick Beven, he traveled to Biarritz, France, to teach his first European workshop — the opening chapter of a sustained effort to spread jiu-jitsu across the Old Continent. In the years that followed, Rodrigues made annual tours through multiple European countries, spending several months each year teaching and building a growing network of students and practitioners.

His relationship with the United Kingdom deepened early in this period. Rodrigues began teaching in the UK in 2002, establishing a presence in British jiu-jitsu that steadily expanded over the following years. By 2006, he formalized that presence into a structured academy network, opening his first locations in Slough and Milton Keynes. The network subsequently grew to encompass Watford, Luton, Peterborough, Norwich, and Eastbourne, eventually reaching as far as Belfast in Northern Ireland — a geographic footprint that reflects both the demand for quality instruction and his commitment to accessible jiu-jitsu across the British Isles.

In 2012, a personal opportunity emerged that blended two of Rodrigues's defining passions. He accepted an invitation to establish and lead a jiu-jitsu academy inside Quiksilver Boardriders, one of the largest surf shops in Europe, situated in Ericeira, Portugal — one of the continent's premier surf destinations. He spent two years on the Portuguese coast developing and embedding the affiliate before returning to continue his work in the United Kingdom.

In 2010, Zé Marcello channeled his vision for a unified European BJJ community into the creation of the Icon Team. Co-founded alongside his students Anderson Pereira, Alexandre Izidro, Jean Pierre, and Berilo Junior, as well as his longtime friend Sérgio Vita, the affiliation was built on a deeply personal philosophy: all of the founding coaches had once competed under the same banner in Brazil, and they sought to recreate that sense of shared identity and collective purpose for their students across Europe.

What began as a collaborative effort among a close-knit group grew into one of the largest grappling affiliations on the European continent, with over 100 affiliated gyms operating under the Icon banner. The team stands as a direct reflection of Rodrigues's broader mission — not simply to teach jiu-jitsu, but to cultivate a cohesive, interconnected community of practitioners united by a common culture and competitive spirit.
