João Zeferino

Born on January 15, 1986, in Florianópolis, Santa Catarina State, Brazil, João Zeferino grew up in a coastal city with a vibrant martial arts culture and a deep-rooted connection to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. He stepped onto the mats for the first time in 2002 at the age of 16, beginning his BJJ journey at the Ataque Duplo academy in his hometown.

Training in an environment that prioritized technical development from the ground up, Zeferino committed fully to the art and progressed steadily through the early belt ranks. Ataque Duplo provided the foundational framework for what would become a distinguished career in both BJJ and mixed martial arts, with Zeferino remaining at the academy through his promotion to purple belt.

Zeferino's path to the black belt was defined by a deliberate willingness to seek out new perspectives and refine his game across multiple training environments. After earning his purple belt at Ataque Duplo, he made a pivotal move in 2005, joining the academy of Claudio Arrais for a year of focused development. That period broadened his technical repertoire and prepared him for the next stage of his BJJ education.

In 2006, Zeferino joined Gracie Barra Florianópolis under the guidance of Alexandre de Souza, head instructor of the Gracie Floripa academy. Under de Souza's mentorship, Zeferino completed his journey through the upper belt ranks and received his black belt. The multi-academy trajectory — spanning Ataque Duplo, the Arrais school, and Gracie Floripa — reflects both his ambition and his openness to absorbing different coaching philosophies throughout his formative years as a grappler.

Competing in the Meio Pesado (Medium Heavyweight – 88kg) division, João Zeferino established himself as one of southern Brazil's standout competitors during the late 2000s. His back-to-back South Brazil Championship titles in 2007 and 2008 affirmed his consistency and technical edge at the regional level.

National Breakthrough and Open Weight Success

2008 proved to be a landmark year in Zeferino's BJJ competitive career. He captured the CBJJE World Cup title — a significant result that elevated his profile well beyond the regional circuit — and reached the podium at the Brazilian Nationals, earning a silver medal against the country's best grapplers. His versatility extended beyond his natural weight class as well, claiming South Brazil Open Weight Silver Medals in both 2008 and 2010, demonstrating his ability to hold his own against larger opponents on the open mat.

Alongside his BJJ pursuits, João Zeferino expanded into mixed martial arts, using the technical foundation built under Alexandre de Souza at Gracie Floripa as the backbone of his fighting game. Recognizing the broader demands of MMA competition, Zeferino took a comprehensive approach to his athletic development — supplementing his elite grappling base with dedicated training in boxing, judo, and yoga, the latter contributing to flexibility, body awareness, and recovery.

MMA Championship Results

Zeferino's cross-disciplinary approach translated directly into results inside the cage. He claimed the UKC-MMA Championship, the Atlas Fight Championship, and the UEP Battle by the Bay Championship in Alabama, establishing himself as a competitive force across multiple regional MMA organizations. These titles, earned in different contexts and promotions, reflect both the effectiveness of his training methodology and his ability to leverage elite-level BJJ skills within the full demands of mixed martial arts competition.
