Jessica Caroline Coelho Dantas

Jessica Caroline Coelho Dantas was born on January 18, 1994, in Brazil. Unlike many elite competitors who begin martial arts training in childhood, Dantas did not gravitate toward competitive sports in her early years. Her introduction to jiu-jitsu came through a women-only class at a fitness gym — a seemingly casual starting point that proved to be a pivotal turning point in her life.

Dantas began formal training at the age of 17 in 2011 under the guidance of coach Wendel Duarte. Her late entry into the sport relative to many of her future rivals makes her rise to elite competition all the more remarkable. What she lacked in early exposure, she more than compensated for through unwavering dedication and rapid technical development.

In 2014, Dantas began training under Alessandro Nunes — a move that would define both her athletic trajectory and personal life, as Nunes later became her husband. Through that partnership, she became a representative of PAX Jiu-Jitsu Academy and Alessandro BJJ on the domestic circuit, while competing internationally under the Brasa / Caio Terra Association banner.

Colored Belt Highlights

Dantas built a compelling record across multiple belt levels and competitive circuits. At blue belt, she claimed gold at the IBJJF European Open in 2016, won the IBJJF South American Championship in 2014, and took top honors at both the IBJJF Rio BJJ Pro and the CBJJ Brazilian Nationals NoGi in 2015. At purple belt, she continued her winning ways with IBJJF South American Championship gold in 2017, multiple CBJJ Brazilian Nationals NoGi titles from 2016 through 2018, back-to-back UAEJJF Abu Dhabi Grand Slam, RJ victories in 2017 and 2018, and strong performances at the IBJJF São Paulo BJJ Pro and Rio BJJ Pro.

Alessandro Nunes promoted her to black belt in September 2019, recognizing not only those results but the complete technical and competitive profile she had built over nearly a decade on the mats.

Dantas made an immediate impact after receiving her black belt, stepping into the Pluma division (118lbs / 53.5kg) against the deepest fields in women's jiu-jitsu. Her black belt career reflects sustained consistency at the elite level across multiple years and competition formats.

Regional Dominance and International Titles

Among her most significant stretches of dominance came at the IBJJF South American Championship, where she claimed gold in 2021, 2022, and 2023 consecutively — establishing herself as the standard-bearer for the region in her weight class. She complemented that regional dominance with back-to-back IBJJF European Championship golds in 2023 and 2024, and added the IBJJF Pan Championship title in 2023 before returning to earn silver at the 2024 edition.

World Championship Performances

At the IBJJF World Championship — the sport's most prestigious event — Dantas has proven that she belongs among the very best. She won silver at the 2021 IBJJF World Championship, reaching the final and announcing herself as a genuine title contender at black belt. Three years later, she returned to claim bronze at the 2024 IBJJF World Championship, a result that underscores her ability to perform at the highest level across separate competitive cycles rather than a single peak moment.

No-Gi and Domestic Results

Dantas has also proven her versatility as a No-Gi competitor. In 2023, she won both the CBJJ Brazilian Nationals NoGi and the IBJJF South American NoGi Championship, demonstrating that her grappling translates effectively beyond the gi. Her performances at the CBJJ Brazilian Nationals in the gi have been consistently strong as well, with silver medals earned in 2021, 2022, and 2023 — a level of podium consistency that speaks to the competitive depth she faces year after year.
