Jefferson Fagundes

Jefferson Fagundes was born in 2000 in the Brazilian state of Tocantins — a region that has historically produced very few elite-level jiu-jitsu competitors. His introduction to martial arts came through karate, which he began exploring at 16 after seeking out classes at a local club. The coach he found there was both a karate and jiu-jitsu instructor, and it was on his recommendation that Fagundes gave BJJ a try. The transition proved immediate and decisive — jiu-jitsu resonated with him from the first sessions, and he chose to pursue it over karate without hesitation.

Fagundes' first BJJ instructor was Jardenir Luz, under whom he trained until the school closed approximately a year after he began. Rather than stepping away from the sport, he continued his development at Projeto Social Sementinha do Amor, a local social project where he trained under black belt Ivanildo Silva — who had also been Jardenir Luz's own instructor. It was under Silva's guidance that Fagundes developed a genuine competitive drive, earning results on the local scene that laid the foundation for everything that followed.

In 2019, still a blue belt, Fagundes made the decisive move to leave Tocantins and relocate to São Paulo in pursuit of a professional career in jiu-jitsu. He joined Cicero Costha, one of Brazil's most accomplished competition academies, placing himself under the direct tutelage of Cicero Costha. The move proved transformative.

Fagundes emerged as one of the most prominent colored belt competitors on the AJP Tour circuit. In 2022, competing as a brown belt, he won the 2022 AJP Abu Dhabi Grand Slam Abu Dhabi and captured the AJP Abu Dhabi World Pro title in the brown belt division — his most significant colored belt honor. He also claimed gold at the 2022 IBJJF South American Championship that same year. In 2023, still at brown belt, he reached the final of the 2023 IBJJF World Championship, finishing as runner-up, and placed second at the 2023 AJP Grand Slam Rio.

Those international results served as the direct basis for his promotion to black belt, which Cicero Costha awarded him in July 2023.

Fagundes made an immediate impression at the black belt level. In 2023, he won the 2023 AJP EU Continental Pro and placed 3rd at the AJP Abu Dhabi World Pro in his first black belt World Pro appearance — a strong debut at that level of competition. Early in 2024, he added a 3rd place finish at the 2024 IBJJF European Championship, demonstrating his ability to compete effectively across different rulesets and organizations.

The 2024 competitive season brought Fagundes his most consequential results as a black belt. At the Abu Dhabi Grand Slam Rome 2024, he claimed gold in his weight division, with the final coming by default after his opponent, Yuri Hendrex, was unable to compete. Later in 2024, at the 2024 AJP Grand Slam Tokyo, Fagundes placed 3rd in a competitive field that saw Khaled Alshehhi take gold and Marcos Froede finish second.

The landmark achievement of Fagundes' black belt career came at the 2024 AJP World Pro, where he won the 62kg division title — the most prestigious individual honor on the AJP Tour and the culmination of years of investment in the circuit that had defined his competitive development since the colored belt ranks. The victory established him firmly among the standout competitors in his weight class on the international stage.

Tocantins ranks among the least represented Brazilian states at the highest levels of competitive jiu-jitsu. The sport's elite talent has historically been concentrated in São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and Paraná, making Fagundes' trajectory all the more distinctive. His path — from a social project in Tocantins to AJP World Pro champion — reflects both the individual drive required to reach that level and the structural role that programs like Projeto Social Sementinha do Amor play in identifying and nurturing talent from underserved regions.

The mentorship chain that shaped Fagundes, from Ivanildo Silva in Tocantins to Cicero Costha in São Paulo, illustrates how deliberate investment in development at each stage can bridge geographic and resource gaps.
