Ilke Bulut

Born on May 8, 1989, in Geneva, Switzerland, to a Turkish father and a Swiss mother, Ilke Bulut grew up with a multicultural identity that would inform his approach to competition and life on the mats. His introduction to martial arts came at age 5 in 1994, when he began practicing judo — a discipline that instilled in him the core principles of grappling: timing, leverage, and competitive composure. By his early teens, Bulut had evolved into a dedicated judoka with serious competitive ambitions.

His judo career came to an unexpected halt in 2003 when a back injury sustained during a tournament forced him off the mats on doctors' orders. Rather than abandoning martial arts altogether, Bulut and his brothers discovered Pride FC and MMA during this same period. Exposure to the sport opened their eyes to the world of submission grappling and, in particular, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. The transition proved natural — the years Bulut had spent on the judo mat had already cultivated the technical discipline and physical awareness that BJJ demands at its highest levels.

In 2005, Ilke Bulut and his brothers found their footing in BJJ by joining Anderson Pereira's gym in Geneva. From the beginning, Bulut attacked the sport with the same competitive hunger that had defined his judo years — entering tournaments and traveling across Europe to seek out high-level competition from the earliest stages of his training. This relentless pursuit of mat time against varied opponents accelerated his technical development and began building his reputation on the European circuit.

In 2009, Bulut received his purple belt, a milestone that marked his shift to full-time athlete. He embraced the commitment without reservation, dividing his training between Europe and Brazil to test himself against the sport's elite. In June 2014, following over nine years of consistent growth and competitive achievement, Anderson Pereira awarded Bulut his black belt — a recognition as much of character as of technical mastery. Bulut competes under the banner of Icon Jiu Jitsu in the 76kg/168lbs weight division.

Brown Belt Dominance and Breakout Results

Long before reaching black belt, Ilke Bulut established himself as one of Europe's most consistent competitors, accumulating podium finishes on the IBJJF European Open circuit across multiple belt levels. His brown belt years proved especially productive — highlighted by a gold medal at the IBJJF European Open in 2013, a result that firmly positioned him among the continent's top grapplers. That same year, he captured the UAEJJF Abu Dhabi World Pro Trials championship and competed in the BJJ Kumite organized by Lloyd Irvin, gaining valuable experience in a high-profile invitational format against international talent.

Black Belt Campaign and Continued Consistency

Bulut carried his momentum into the black belt ranks without missing a step. Across the IBJJF international open circuit, he added gold medals in London and Rome at brown belt before continuing his winning ways with titles in Munich and London following his 2014 promotion. His 2015 campaign was among his strongest, producing victories at the IBJJF London Fall International Open, the IBJJF London Fall No-Gi International Open, and the IBJJF Munich Winter International Open, as well as a runner-up finish at the IBJJF European Open No-Gi Championship. In 2018, Bulut claimed gold at the IBJJF Zurich Open as a black belt — a result that affirmed his competitive drive remained as sharp as ever years after his promotion.
