Gustavo Maron

Gustavo Maron was born on January 10, 1996, in São Paulo, Brazil, and grew up with a natural orientation toward competitive sport. Before finding his calling in martial arts, he competed in swimming at a federated level, earning a podium finish at the São Paulo State Championship — an early testament to the discipline and competitive drive that would later define his jiu-jitsu career.

Maron's path to the grappling arts began in childhood through judo, where he developed a foundational understanding of body mechanics and leverage before ever putting on a gi. A passion for superhero comic books and action movies fed a growing desire to become a martial artist, and at the age of 12, he took his first formal steps in jiu-jitsu under coach Eduardo Miranda at the Rebook gym, an Alliance affiliate in São Paulo.

In those early years on the mats, Maron trained almost exclusively in no-gi jiu-jitsu, a format that sharpened his instincts and athleticism throughout his teenage years. It was not until the age of 16 that gi training became a regular part of his practice, broadening his technical vocabulary and laying the groundwork for a more complete competitive game.

At 19, Maron made a decisive commitment to his jiu-jitsu career by becoming a fixture in the Alliance headquarters competition class in São Paulo. That environment — populated by some of the sport's most accomplished competitors — accelerated his development and marked the true beginning of his engagement with the tournament circuit.

Throughout his colored belt years, Maron built a reputation as one of the most consistent and technically accomplished competitors on the São Paulo State circuit. Fábio Gurgel, the leader of Alliance, graded Maron at every belt level from white onwards, overseeing a progression defined by structured growth rather than shortcut advancement.

The results on the competition floor validated that investment. At blue belt, Maron posted a World Championship record of silver in 2015 followed by bronze in 2016, demonstrating that he belonged among the sport's elite from the earliest stages of his career. At purple belt, he reached the final of the IBJJF Pan Championship in 2017, earning silver, while also claiming bronze at the IBJJF World Championship No-Gi in 2016 and at the CBJJ Brazilian Nationals in 2017.

The brown belt years represented Maron's most concentrated run of major titles. In 2017, he won gold at the IBJJF South American Championship and captured the CBJJ Brazilian Nationals No-Gi title. In 2018, he added the FPJJ São Paulo State Championship, the ACBJJ World Championship, and the ACBJJ South American Championship to his record, establishing himself as the dominant force in his division at that level. He closed out his brown belt career with a bronze medal at the IBJJF World Championship in 2019, completing a World Championship podium record that spanned three consecutive belt levels.

In June 2019, Fábio Gurgel promoted Maron to black belt — a recognition of a colored belt career as thorough as it was decorated.

Maron wasted little time establishing himself at the black belt level. Competing in the Peso Médio division at 82.30 kg (181.5 lbs), he claimed gold at both the IBJJF Vitoria Open and the IBJJF Curitiba Open in 2019, signaling that the transition to the sport's highest rank had done nothing to diminish his competitive effectiveness. A bronze medal at the UAEJJF Grand Slam in Rio de Janeiro in 2019 further underscored his readiness for elite international competition.

Maron competes under the Alliance banner, carrying the team's standards onto the international circuit while also representing the Dream Art Project, the athlete support initiative with which he has been associated since its founding.

The Dream Art Project was founded in October 2018 by Isaque Bahiense, a fellow middleweight and Alliance teammate who had trained alongside Maron at the Alliance headquarters for years. The two developed a close friendship through shared training, and many of the ideas underpinning the project took shape within that relationship.

Both Maron and Bahiense were driven by a shared conviction: that talented athletes from less financially privileged backgrounds deserved meaningful support in building their competitive careers. While Bahiense is credited as the founder of Dream Art, Maron was one of the project's original members, involved from its inception and instrumental in laying the foundations of what became one of the more recognized athlete development initiatives in Brazilian jiu-jitsu.

Maron's role within Dream Art extended well beyond his standing as a competitor. His skills as a video content producer became central to the project's public identity, and his work in that capacity has been instrumental in communicating Dream Art's mission to a wider audience.

Alongside his growth as a competitor, Maron cultivated a genuine interest in video editing and content production. He launched the YouTube channel Kaullys BJJ, through which he published a series of light-hearted episodes exploring the day-to-day realities of life as a jiu-jitsu competitor. The channel reflected both his personality and his growing technical proficiency behind the camera.

That proficiency did not go unnoticed within Alliance. Maron transitioned from running his personal channel to working directly for Fábio Gurgel and the Alliance organization, applying his media skills in service of the team's broader communications. When the Dream Art Project rose to prominence following its October 2018 founding, Maron stepped into the role of primary video content producer for the initiative — a position that allowed him to merge his competitive identity with a meaningful contribution to the project's outreach and growth.

Maron's work in content creation represents a dimension of his impact on the jiu-jitsu community that runs parallel to his record on the competition floor, reflecting a broader engagement with the sport that extends well beyond the mat.
