Building a Championship Foundation
After establishing herself as a standout at GFTeam Campo Grande, Giovanna's continued growth led her to transition to Alliance — Campo Grande following her promotion to blue belt. There, her results kept building, and she went on to earn her purple belt. Her colored belt record during this period was exceptional: gold at the IBJJF World Championship at blue belt in 2021, followed by gold at the same event at purple belt in 2022, along with Pan Championship and Brazilian Nationals titles across multiple belt levels.
The Crossroads Decision
Despite her success on the mats, Jara was navigating a difficult financial reality. Seeing no viable professional path ahead, she made the difficult decision to step back from competitive aspirations, accepting a marriage proposal and preparing to pursue BJJ solely as a hobby. The competitive chapter of her life appeared to be closing.
What changed everything was an unexpected opportunity. The Dream Art project — one of the sport's foremost professional teams — was seeking a female athlete in her weight class. Giovanna applied and was accepted. At the time, Dream Art's lodging arrangements were structured around the male squad, which meant Jara initially had to fund her own accommodation after arriving in January 2021. She made that sacrifice without hesitation, leaving her hometown and settled life behind to pursue the professional path she had nearly abandoned. In April 2021, she was formally moved into the Fighter's House.
Brown Belt and Professional Emergence
The impact of training within a structured professional environment under Dream Art's coaching staff was immediate and profound. In June 2022, following a double gold medal performance at the IBJJF World Championship, Jara received her brown belt from coach Isaque Bahiense — a recognition that reflected how dramatically her game had evolved. Later that year, she also claimed 1st place at the ADCC 2nd Brazil Trials, adding a major no-gi credential to her growing résumé.
In 2023, Giovanna made another pivotal transition, leaving Dream Art to join Fratres. On May 23, 2023, she received her black belt — presented by her mother, Lucinha Jara — a deeply personal moment that marked the culmination of a journey defined by perseverance, sacrifice, and an unwillingness to settle for anything less than her full potential.
