Daniel Wanderley

Daniel Wanderley was born on February 19, 1980, in Brazil, and his path to Brazilian jiu-jitsu was shaped by a broad foundation across multiple martial disciplines. Beginning his martial arts journey at age 12, he explored capoeira and karate before discovering the ground-based art that would define his career. In 2000, Wanderley made the decisive transition to Brazilian jiu-jitsu, enrolling at the academy of Gutenberg Melo, whose lineage traces directly through the Carlson Gracie family tree.

This multi-disciplinary background gave Wanderley a well-rounded athletic base and a deep appreciation for the technical demands of jiu-jitsu — qualities that would serve him throughout both his competitive and coaching careers.

Wanderley's connection to the Carlson Gracie lineage deepened in 2005, when a visit to his mother in Chicago led to an unexpected and pivotal encounter. During that trip, he met Carlson Gracie himself and went on to live and train directly under the legendary master for three months. The experience proved transformative. In February 2006, Wanderley received his black belt through the Carlson Gracie lineage, formalizing a bond with one of BJJ's most storied traditions.

His time in Chicago also placed him at the center of elite MMA preparation. Wanderley contributed to Stephan Bonnar's training camp for his historic rematch with Forrest Griffin, a camp co-led by Carlson Gracie and Duke Roufus. It was during this formative period that Wanderley earned the nickname "Cachorrão" — Portuguese for Big Dog — a moniker that captured both his physical presence and the relentless fighting spirit he embodied within the Carlson Gracie tradition.

Competing across the Peso Leve and Meso Médio weight divisions, Wanderley built one of the most consistent records on the IBJJF masters circuit over an active stretch spanning from at least 2010 through 2018. His breakout run at the masters level came in 2010 and 2011, when he claimed back-to-back IBJJF Pan American No-Gi Championship gold medals in the Masters 1 division, announcing himself as a force on the national masters scene.

His performances at the IBJJF World No-Gi Championship reinforced that consistency, with podium finishes in 2010, 2012, 2014, and 2017 across both the Masters 1 and Masters 2 divisions as he advanced through age categories. Beyond those marquee events, Wanderley accumulated titles at regional and national IBJJF tournaments across the country — claiming gold in New York, Dallas, Chicago, Atlanta, Denver, and Las Vegas — a geographic range that speaks to both his competitive drive and his longevity.

Back-to-back American Nationals titles in 2016 and 2018 at the Masters 2 level, combined with the American Nationals No-Gi gold in 2018, reflected a competitor who remained sharp well into his third decade of training. Outside the IBJJF circuit, Wanderley also captured the UFC Fan Expo/Grapplers Quest No-Gi Advanced division title in 2013 and the NAGA Expert division title in 2016, underscoring his versatility across both gi and no-gi formats and multiple competitive organizations.

In 2013, Wanderley joined Roufusport MMA Academy in Milwaukee with the original intention of sharpening his own mixed martial arts game. His technical depth on the ground quickly drew the attention of the coaching staff, and he transitioned into the role of full-time jiu-jitsu coach — a shift that became one of the most significant chapters of his career.

Among his first major responsibilities was preparing Anthony Pettis for UFC 164, contributing grappling strategy for a high-profile UFC Lightweight Championship defense. His ability to communicate complex ground concepts and tailor game plans to elite MMA athletes made him an immediate asset within the system led by Duke Roufus.

Wanderley's work with Pettis extended into the television arena when he served as the grappling coach for Pettis's team on The Ultimate Fighter: A Champion Will Be Crowned (TUF 20), the historic all-female season. In that role, he developed the submission grappling skills of a roster of elite women's strawweight prospects competing for a UFC contract. His coaching fingerprints also extended across the broader Roufusport roster, contributing to the MMA development of fighters including Erik Koch and Ben Askren.
