Carlos Melo earned his black belt under Claudio Franca, a highly respected grappling coach whose influence on West Coast Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu has been substantial. That connection placed Carlos within a lineage of technically rigorous, competition-tested practitioners. He has also been associated with the Caio Terra Association, reflecting his ties to elite-level BJJ instruction and a broader network of high-caliber competitors and coaches.

Founding a Competitive Program

The 2013 Breakthrough

The 2013 IBJJF Senior World Championships became the defining moment for Gilroy BJJ as a competitive program. Carlos brought six competitors to the tournament, and the team returned home with five world champions and six gold medals — an extraordinary result for any academy, let alone one of Gilroy BJJ's size. That performance announced the team's arrival on the national BJJ stage and validated Carlos's approach to coaching.

His coaching philosophy draws from every dimension of his background. The competitive instincts developed through years of rugby and BJJ, the understanding of human motivation cultivated through his psychology education, and the clarity of purpose shaped by law enforcement all inform how he prepares and guides his students. Identifying the Disparity

In 2018, Carlos Melo and his student Karen Peters identified a structural inequity embedded in competitive Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu that had largely gone unaddressed. Masters age divisions — spanning brackets from Master 1 through Master 7 — were widely available for male competitors at tournaments around the world, but for women, those same age-appropriate divisions simply did not exist at most events. Only a handful of tournaments per year offered any Masters divisions for women, leaving a large and growing segment of the BJJ community without meaningful competitive opportunities.

The Advocacy Campaign

Rather than accepting the status quo, Carlos and Karen launched a grassroots advocacy campaign to raise awareness of the disparity and mobilize the broader BJJ community to demand change. Their efforts reframed the issue clearly: the absence of women's Masters divisions was not a minor administrative oversight but a substantive barrier that excluded a significant population of dedicated athletes from the sport's competitive landscape.

Lasting Impact

The campaign succeeded. The IBJJF and other major organizations around the world responded by opening age-appropriate Masters divisions for women competitors — a structural change that has since expanded competitive access for women across all Masters age brackets globally. The impact of that initiative continues to reverberate through the sport, creating opportunities for thousands of women who previously had no competitive home in their age group.
